Comfortable private guest unit, two-story, full kitchen and full bathroom downstairs, two large bedrooms upstairs. Beautiful setting, marshland view, birds and wildlife, gorgeous sunsets, quiet nights, fresh air and only 7 miles from downtown. Perfect for a relaxing, creative getaway!
Our hilltop ranch is one of the most beautiful spots in the area. We're located just seven miles northwest of downtown, six miles out a two lane paved country road, across a single-lane bridge, with the last one mile stretch of dirt road leads visitors up the mountain to our private heaven. There's plenty of nature here! The rugged environment of natural sights and sounds will renew your spirit with fresh air, plentiful wildlife (watch for wild turkeys on the road right now!), lush forest surroundings and wide open meadows. This is a place to relax and let the pressures of life disappear.
Our twenty-two acres offers a place for you to breathe deeply, enjoy the view and take nature walks out multiple private roads that meander through the hills. Land parcels here are twenty to forty acres, so neighbors are a distance away yet near enough to create a neighborhood feeling.
Our ranch was home to sixteen sheep before we turned it into a horse ranch for our daughter who now has her own ranch. The arena, round pen and horse stalls are still here but aren't used unless horses are hauled in, which isn't often.
We call the guest unit where you'll stay the "barn apartment". It's located in our big red barn building where the sheep and horses used to live. Twelve years ago, we converted the animal spaces into a woodworking shop and art studio and remodeled the pre-existing apartment. Since then, family and friends have enjoyed staying in the barn apartment, and now we're sharing it with visitors like you. The woodworking shop and art studio are our work spaces which we don't share.
We are one of the last parcels here on the power grid, so electricity is available in the apartment. Our water comes from our well and we have a start-of-the-art filtration system. We collect rain water and store it to insure sufficient water for our needs. You'll see several of our water tanks when you turn the corner to our ranch.
The apartment is private, quiet, has its own entrance porch and a carport parking space. The interior has tile flooring throughout and a large tile shower. The kitchen area contains a full double-oven range, microwave, small built-in refrigerator, toaster, electric coffee brewer and water heater. There is dining space for four and a round folding table where you can sit and enjoy the view while eating, relaxing or working.
The stairway leads to two large bedrooms upstairs with comfortable queen size beds. One bed is a Bamboo brand, an eco-friendly mattress made of completely natural bamboo products, and the other is a Casper mattress, one of the best memory foam mattresses on the market. Both beds will provide you with a good night's sleep, comfortable rest and rejuvenation. Each bed is made up with soft, white linens and pillows to add to your comfort.
WIFI is available here on Satellite. Due to our rural location our connection isn't high speed, but it is fast enough for basic online needs. For our guests who enjoy media, we installed a new TV plus a DVD player to watch movies, and a small library of books if you want to curl up and read. Electronic devices work here for email and texting, however, most cell phone services are spotty or don't work at all.
Your guest apartment is professionally cleaned and the kitchen includes bottled water, Starbucks ground coffee and Via instant coffe, breakfast teas, muffins, a fruit basket (seasonal fruit), a few sodas and snack foods, four dinner place settings and utensils, paper plates and cups, plastic utensils, kitchen utensils and cutting board.
Our ranch has become a popular destination for friends and family who travel here each year, some from throughout the US and Europe. Everyone enjoys the fresh, natural, rugged environment, local amenities and unique community. We live a different lifestyle, and you will enjoy a much-needed break from fast-paced city living.
Mendocino County is rich with plentiful local wineries, breweries, artisan shops, arts and crafts. We are located centrally so you may visit the Giant Redwoods to the north, the gorgeous northern California coast to the west, dozens of wineries to the south and the San Joaquin valley to the east, all within an hour drive.
Locally, our small town offers several eateries, most with organic, natural and vegan choices, as well as small old-fashioned restaurants and fast food favorites.
We welcome guests from Europe and are fluent in German and French, as well as conversational Italian.

Joy and Burt met in 1965, when Burt was the foreign exchange student at Joy's high school in Los Angeles. We spent our senior year together then Burt returned to Switzerland. We didn't see each other for 40 years (no internet back then!). During those long years, Burt became an attorney in Zurich, and Joy became an artist and entrepreneur. We reconnected in 2004, married, and have lived on our ranch since then. We're retired now, kids and horses gone, and we want to share our beautiful place with you.
Our home is full of Joy's fine art and our location provides endless inspiration for artists. We enjoy designing and building and have many projects going on the ranch. The arena, gazebo and outstructures in our photos were built with our own hands. Burt's workshop and Joy's art studio are the heart of our daily life.
Burt speaks several languages and is an avid reader of history, novels and just about anything! He is a movie buff with deep knowledge of films. His life in Switzerland included owning 12 classic Jaguars (cars!), some of which he restored himself. He's also loves sailing and has sailed yachts all over the world including 4 Atlantic crossings using celestial nativation which came in handy before GPS. He's a very international guy!
Joy has stayed put in northern California raising a horse crazy daughter who realized her World Champion dreams in 2013 and 2016. Today her grown daughter has her own ranch. Joy is a lifelong artist and many of her works hang in our home. If you are interested in art, our ranch provides an inspirational, peaceful place to create, so bring your drawing pad.
We are relaxed and easy going most of the time, otherwise we're hard at work on the ranch. Our visitors love the natural, rugged setting. Those who come from the city can relax, breathe fresh air, hear natural sounds and let go of stress. Many visitors want to just sit and stare at the view, which is something we do ourselves every day.
Joy loves the "flyers" here, watching birds in their natural habitat. We're amazed at them, and because we're high on a hill, they sometimes fly close enough to hear the flap of their wings.
There is no place else we'd rather be than on our ranch, and we feel so lucky to have this beautiful place to share with you.
