We have been a host on airbnb for quiet some time and we have really enjoyed welcoming all types of people. We have hosted a wide variety of guests. In fact many of our guests have been back to stay with us more than once and we welcome them. However the experience with Michael was something totally different. From the first initial contact, Michael seemed a little rude and aggressive. Upon checking in, Michael was welcomed by our cleaner and shown around the apartment. He proceeded to sniff and smell all the towels and bed linen provided and told our cleaner that one pillow case was not clean. She assured him that it was and that everything had been washed that very morning. To which he replied "your promises don't change anything". Of course my cleaners response was to agree to remove the entire bed set and bring him a new one. He did not want this and only wanted one pillow case changed. She kindly explained to him that the entire bed set was washed together so if one pillow case seemed unacceptable then the entire set would be. She returned 30 minutes later and proceeded to change the bed set. Michael raised his voice to her demanding that she only change the pillow case and tried to grab it out of the bag she was carrying. She refused however and changed the entire set. The next morning Michael again contacted us, using not nice language as the neighbours next door were making noise at 9am. 3 week previously they had had a leak and were finishing up some repairs and were hovering the apartment. It was unacceptable to Michael for them to make any noise before 10am and he demanded the we stop them from continuing. We of course promised to speak with the neighbours and kindly ask that they respect that our guests are on holiday and ask if they could maybe be a little quieter before 10am. However, Michael did not wait for us to contact the neighbours and took it upon him self to demand that they make no noise before he wakes up. That very morning the insurance company wanted to send an inspector to quickly look at our wall to make sure no damage had been caused by the leak next door and the whole process would take no more than 5 minutes to complete. We sent a message to Michael explaining and asked him if he would be willing to allow the inspector to quickly look inside if he in fact came to the apartment that day. To which we received a bombardment of messages insisting we change the appointment to a day when Michael was not there. We tried to explain to Michael that it was not an appointment we had arranged and was in fact next door that had arranged it. He was adamant it was not happening, which of course is his choice and we refused the inspector entry. At this point Michael had only been staying in our apartment for less than 12 hours and the situation was fast becoming uncomfortable. This was a new guest experience for us and we weren´t quiet sure of how to proceed. We decided to take a closer look at Michaels airbnb profile and read his host reviews from previous trips he had taken. All of which seemed fairly good. Except however for one. A previous host had reviewed Michael stating that he was not In fact the guest that checked into their property. Damage and disruption was caused and "Michael" was asked to leave their property, also incurring damage fees and charges for repairs. This prompted us to contact our cleaner with a picture of Michael. To our dismay the person checked into our apartment was not the same person that had made the booking. Immediately I contacted Michael asking why his profile photo and contact information did not match the ones he had supplied. His response was that on airbnb you can supply any photo as a profile picture. We then explained that we were not comfortable with Michael staying as a guest and would be very releaved when he checked out the following morning at 11am. For this reason we also contacted airbnb support and asked them to make a note. Lastly we contacted Michael and kindly asked that he leave the property promptly at 11am and in the same condition as he found it when he checked in. We also asked that he leave the keys inside the apartment and closed the door. (the door cannot open from the outside without a key) and this is normal procedure for guests leaving in the early hours etc. Michael however decided to leave the keys inside the lock, closing the door and making it impossible to open the door from the outside. When our cleaner arrived at 11am to clean the property it was not possible to open the door. A locksmith had to be called in order for them to gain access. In conclusion, this was not a nice hosting experience! In fact it's the only bad experience we have had. We hope all future guests can look past this negative review and judge for themselves from our many other reviews of the type of hospitality and welcome we provide.
