Pirralilla was built in 1902 by the Hawkers, a wealthy pastoral family, as their summer residence. Originally it was a very large acreage with orchards, grazing land, manicured gardens, tennis courts and swimming pool. The buildings include a double storey mansion, church, laundry block, staff eating quarters, stables, double storey pool house, governess's cottage, chauffeur's residence, caretaker's cottage and workshop and gardener's cottage.
In the 1950s Pirralilla entered its second phase and was passed onto the Sisters of St Joseph ( Mary MacKillop's order) and it became St Joseph's Convent. A church was added onto the mansion and in 1972 a 30 room dormitory was built adjacent.
Pirralilla turned full circle in 2009, as it was returned to a family estate and home for George and Esme Savva and their six children. It retains all the original buildings on 10 acres. The property has been brought into the 21st century and returned to its former glory. Work has now started on renewing the gardens.
