Our unique home will provide a once in a life time off the grid experience. Located in a secluded and remote location of the Western Navajo Nation, our home is easily accessible to local restaurants, stores, and not far from two of the natural wonders, Grand Canyon and Monument Valley.

Our one room earth home called a Hogan, is located along the Little Colorado River and is 29 miles east of Grand Canyon and a 1 hour drive north of Flagstaff.
It is on the family homestead of my grandmothers summer sheep camp.
There is no electricity, the stars and moon are all you need.
There is no running water, however 5 gallonwater jug will be provided for your use.
There is no plumbing, a short brisk walk to a outhouse is available.

Comfortable accommodations for two are shown in the picture, however we have a additional cot for a third guest when reserved at booking for a small additional fee.

Přístup pro hosty

You will have access to the large open space within the homestead, including the outdoor cooking stove for cooking purpose.

Vztahy s hosty

This is a self check in/check out accommodation. I or a family member are only 1 1/2 mile away. Throughout your stay I will always be available by text or a phone call if you have any questions during your stay.

We give our guest their privacy at the male hogan when occupied. We also have more structures on the homestead that is accessible to everyone in my family who do maintenance work on the property.

Další věci, které stojí za zmínku

Being a guest at our family homestead will give you glimpse of our daily life without running water, electricity or plumbing.

Expect summer temperatures to be over 100 degrees during the day and as low as 70 degrees at night. Please check the weather and temperatures before booking if you are not use to the Arizona heat.Best time to check in is at 7:30 PM. Please be aware that the dirt road conditions and river can be altered by unpredictable southwest monsoon weather including the rainstorms and flooding that would result in possible cancellation for your safety.

Please be prepared for cooler winter temperatures. During your stay, it is highly recommended you know how to build a basic fire for heating purpose and to maintain the stove throughout the night to keep warm.

Unforgettable. Unequalled. Beautiful. Those are the three words I’d use to describe Shanna’s hogan. We arrived about 45 minutes before complete nightfall. Shanna’s mother greeted us and gave us a brief history of the hogan and traditions. It was a very warm welcome and she even already had a fire going. The night sky was amazing. I️ have never seen the Milky Way so bright. We were provided with exactly what we needed for the night. We cooked dinner over a wood stove. We danced under the stars. We slept soundly and comfortably. I️ could not believe how quiet it was. I️ hope to make it back one day. I️ don’t want this to be a once in a lifetime experience. I️ highly recommend Shanna’s hogan to anyone who appreciates beauty and history.

The hogan was awesome! We had trouble finding it in the dark but Shanna was such a good hostess and responded immediately when I let her know we were lost. She even sent a family member out to come find us and bring us to the hogan! There is nothing I would improve about our stay, it was exactly what we hoped for!

The hogan is a really unique place to stay, a convenient stop off for travellers between the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley. We had a great night and made to feel very welcome by Shanna and her mother. We enjoyed reading the books of Navajo stories and local history that were left too. If you're travelling in a 2wd it is possible - but do we careful crossing the river bed on the return trip (we weren't and took it too fast.)

If u want to be off the grid, this is as good as it gets. I came on a bike. The dirt road was okay but there is a dry river bed to cross which fortunately I managed. However it was dark and if would have been ugly if the bike was laid down. The mud hut is clean. Even the dirt floor. There's water and wood. Plus starter chips, a lighter and lots of lamps. It's a bit scary on ur own, there's nothing and I mean nothing out there but u. No lights. No sounds. Nothing. But that's what I came for.

It was a one of a kind experience of a lifetime. I've never seen stars so bright in my whole entire life. Such a beautiful scene.

Shanna's first question when I requested to book was accurate, "have you been camping before?" If you have, this is a luxury camping experience - in addition to the exposure to Navajo culture. My recommendations for future travelers: Arrive before sunset to get your bearings. I arrived a little after dark and didn't get to see what was around me until sunrise (although the stars were phenomenal!) Eat at the Cameron Trading Post before or after arriving (their food, gift shop, and art gallery were impressive). Bring slip on sandals for trips to the outhouse. I slept in a sweatshirt and longjohns, in addition to the warm blankets Shanna provided and slept so deeply. I also wish I had brought a small chair and binoculars to view the stars. There was plenty to see (2 shooting stars within the first ten minutes!), but I would have stayed up half the night outside if I had a good lawn chair to sit in. Also, save a little time to read the material Shanna leaves out about hogans and Navajo culture. I really enjoyed the whole experience! Lastly, I did not have service in Cameron or anywhere outside of Las Vegas. Print out the directions to the hogan before you go!

I never got to stay here... things came up so I had to drive back home but I would've loved to stay at Shanna's place. It's definitely on my list when I'm back on this side of the state.
