In the summer the ferries are very full because Vancouver Island is a very popular holiday location. Reservations do cost extra but it is a very wise to get one. Because it is very busy- make sure that you arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your sailing (45 is better) or you will lose your reservation. You can do this on the BC ferries website.
