“Located in the Vale of the Deadly Nightshade (halfway between Barrow and Dalton-in-Furness), Furness Abbey was founded in 1123 and was the second largest, richest, and influential abbey in the country. In 2012, excavations uncovered the grave of a Cistercian abbot, which also contained a very rare medieval gilded crosier and jewelled ring – these are now on display in the visitor centre.”

History Museum
“The Dock Museum (free entry) is well worth a visit. Exhibitions on the history of the town, focus on the shipbuilding industry (now BAE Systems), the steelworks industry (Barrow once had the world’s largest), the Furness Railway and the World War II bombings of the town. There is also a Viking gallery, containing numerous Viking treasures found in the local area, including the Furness Hoard.”

“More than 250 species of bird have been recorded at the site and it is home to Cumbria’s only colony of grey seals (access to the beach where the seals are located is prohibited, however seal trips from nearby Roa Island are available via the Piel Island ferry, link below). ”

“You will find a diverse range of events and activities at The Forum, as we again aim to bring exciting entertainment to Barrow-in-Furness. There should be something for everyone during the current season and we are very proud to welcome Internationally renowned performers alongside local dance and amateur groups.”

Natural Feature
“The Cistercian monks of Furness Abbey used the island as a safe harbour and built a warehouse there for the storage of grain, wine and wool. A castle was built around 1327 to oversee trade and provide defence. Today, the ruined castle is managed by English Heritage (free entry). The island is also home to The Ship Inn, which dates from the late 18th century. Access to the island is by ferry from Roa Island (connected to the mainland by a causeway). The ferry also runs seal trips, which visit the seal colony on nearby Walney Island.”

Museum
“Perfect for rainy days, a trip to Barrow-in-Furness to see the BAE sheds and maybe a sneak at a submarine or warship. Opposite the sheds is The Dock Museum... Entry by donation as I write, the museum also hosts art exhibitions, vintage pop-ups etc. from time to time. ”
