Hikes

Hiking- One of the best ways to experience the wilderness of Alaska! There are two ways to hike in Denali. On marked trails, or off trail in any direction you want. If you would like more experience hiking off trail and navigating the wilderness we would suggest contacting Travers Alaska (907-903-0979). Tell them you are staying at the Harbor House. You could also watch the safety video at the Denali Backcountry Desk located behind the Wilderness Access Center. Please review wildlife protocol if you plan to hike. We have had many moose and grizzly encounters - knowing how to react when seeing these animals in the wilderness is crucial. There are miles of tangled, unmarked trails that start at the end of Yanert Rd. (the road The Harbor House is on). We highly recommend bringing a GPS if you explore the local trails because none are marked. There are about 30 miles of designated trails in the East side of Denali Park. A description of the trails can be found at the visitor center and on the park website. One of the most popular hikes is the 1.5 mile Horseshoe Lake trail. Our favorites are: •9.5 mile one way - Triple Lakes Trail- this trail begins/ends about a mile from The Harbor House near the Village Hotel and begins/ends at the Denali Park Visitor Center. You’ll need to figure out transportation. There may be a courtesy bus from the Village Hotel to the Visitor Center. •4 mile one way Savage Alpine Trail— We like to hike from Mountain Vista and end at the Savage River. From Savage River you can flag down a green bus and get a ride back to your car. •Thorofare Ridge Trail- Marked trail at the Eilson Visitor Center.
