Called the "Camp David" of the west, come see who exactly visited the Annenberg estate over the years, tour the home and take in views of the 31-hole golf course surrounding it (advanced reservations required). The visitor center and gardens are lovely and do not require reservations. They have a nice film about the Annenbergs, videos about the estate, a changing art exhibit and wonderful gardens.

Check out the trail through the palm tree grove. It's short and shaded. There is a short, steep incline to the valley floor. More trails available, but make sure to take water and choose a cooler day.

It's free and starts in a palm oasis before heading out into more barren areas for hiking trails. This preserve guards the fringe-toed lizard -- we saw several and they are cool!
Check out the free walking tours on their website. I took a very interesting plant tour with Marcia who identified numerous plants and talked about how the local. Tribe used these plants.
