Although now in a ruined state, with its huge capstone having fallen off, Zennor Quoit is still an impressive monument. Quoits are probably the earliest of any of the prehistoric monuments remaining, dating from the early Neolithic period (3500-2500 BC), and were constructed by the early farmers who had recently settled and begun to plant crops and raise cattle. Each group of farmers occupied their own territory, and on high ground nearby would construct one of these Quoits. See the ‘Local Walks’ Section for details on how to find the quoit.

Lanyon Quoit is located northwest of Penzance on the road between Madron and Morvah, about 2 miles from Morvah. It stands only about 50 metres to the east of the road and is therefore is relatively easy to locate. In the eighteenth century the quoit had four supporting stones and the structure was tall enough for a person on horseback to ride under. However, in 1815, Lanyon Quoit fell down in a storm. Nine years later enough money was raised by local inhabitants to re-erect the structure.

On the coast road between Zennor and St Just you will pass by Carn Galver Mine. The name Carn Galver means rockpile at the lookout place. The mine was worked until 1878 and was restored twenty ago by the National Trust. It’s worth a visit as you pass by and is a beautiful spot to watch the sunset!

Mên an Tol (shown at top of page) is an archaeological monument comprising a circular holed stone and two upright stones, believed to date from the Bronze Age. The name is from the Cornish words 'maen' meaning 'stone' 'an' meaning 'the' and 'tol' meaning 'hole'. It is thought to possess healing powers and many visitors pass through the centre of the stone in honour of this tradition. It’s located on the same road as the Lanyon Quoit, nearer to Morvah and also on the left hand side of the road (when travelling from Morvah) A small sign on the right at the parking area on Bosullow Common will indicate the beginning of the footpath you’ll need to take, it’s an easy 15 minute walk.

Boskednan Nine Maidens: has 11 standing stones (out of a probable original 19). This ‘holy hilltop’ was perhaps thought of as the dwelling place of the spirits of the ancestors, or the Gods/Goddesses. There was also formerly a standing stone as outlier to this stone circle, 43 paces to the NW, which marked the direction of the midsummer sun set - now only a stump remains. There is a path leading from Mên-an-Tol to this stone circle, alternatively it can be located on the same road as Men a Tol (nearer to Penzance), by following signs to Ding Dong Mine.

The stunning Cornish coastline around Pendeen was once at the heart of the Cornish tin and copper mining industry. Geevor Tin Mine gives you the opportunity to visit a real mine and learn what life was like for a Cornish miner. Put on your hard hat and explore the mine! Geevor us a hands-on site and have lots of activities and events for the whole family to experience and enjoy. This preserved mining site features a museum, underground tour and visitor center all perched on the rugged cliffs of Penwith, offering magnificent coastal views high above the crashing surf below. There’s usually an opportunity to talk with one of the previous Minors, lots of interactive displays, and best of all … the ability to pan for gems! There’s also a large café (that can be visited even without a ticket to the mine) and it has incredible views out to the Atlantic. https://geevor.com/

Cape Cornwall – not so much a day out, but indeed a great place to explore and certainly a magnificent setting to watch the sunset. Cape Cornwall is one of only two capes in Britain. The Cape marks the spot where the Atlantic currents divide. It was bought by Heinz for the nation as part of their centenary celebrations and presented to the National Trust in 1987. The chimney stack dates back to 1894 when Cape Cornwall Mine was in operation, extracting tin and copper from out under the sea. Now, the site is part of the Tin Coast and Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. Brisons Rocks have caused many shipwrecks in their time. They are said to have once been home to a prison, but now are an important breeding ground for seabirds. From Cape Cornwall, there are lots of great walks to discover – but please stick to the main footpaths as there are many mine shafts along the coast from Cape Cornwall reminders of this landscapes mining past. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/cape-cornwall

Kynance Cove is rightly revered as a Cornish gem on the Lizard and is Britain’s most southerly point. Its white sands, turquoise water and serpentine rocks, smoothed by the sea, combine to make it one of the most photographed, filmed and painted beaches in Cornwall. The cove regularly features on lists of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and on a sunny day at low tide, you’ll see why it deserves this accolade! The beach at low tide reveals a series of coves and interconnected caves, with splendid Victorian names such as the Ladies Bathing Pool and the Drawing Room. The views from the beach (and the carpark) are simply stunning at sunset. Tips: during the summer months Kynance can get very busy and the car park is often full before 11am. We recommend arriving early! Also, be sure to plan your visit by the tide, as the beach almost completely disappears at high tide and take care not to get cut off by the rising water. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/kynance-cove

They also have a great new café which offers all day food from breakfast, lunch to dinner, snacks, drinks and is licensed. https://jubileepool.co.uk/

Film & Theatre

Newlyn Filmhouse opened in March 2016 and is a popular place to visit, with a two screen Cinema and spacious Cafe Bar. We recommend booking in advance for films, events and restaurant meals. The digital screens feature armchair and sofa style eating. As well as the best in mainstream and alternative cinema, offerings include live events, children's films and local titles. The fully licensed Cafe Bar upstairs is a great place to meet before or after a film. The seasonal menu provides freshly delicious cooked food. Top Tip: the Cinema has a ‘rustle free’ policy and does not sell or allow bags of popcorn, snacks or treats – so take sweets or snacks with you in a rustle free bag! http://newlynfilmhouse.com/

The Royal Cinema St Ives, is a 3 Screen Cinema situated at the bottom of The Stennack in Royal Square, opposite the Co-op. The Malakoff bus station and St Ives railway station are a few minutes’ walk away. The Cinema provides a full program of screenings, but it is not one of the most modern environments and would benefit from refurbishment – this said, you get what you pay for, and when the lights go down you’ll enjoy your movie and forget the décor! https://st-ives.merlincinemas.co.uk/

Minack Theatre is a unique theatre dramatically situated on the cliffs high above the Atlantic Ocean at Porthcurno, near Lands’ End. They host a full programme of drama, musicals and opera every summer, together with music, comedy and story-telling events, from May to September. As well as visiting the Minack to experience a show, people also go just to look round, experience the stunning views and learn more about the Minack’s story – there’s an exhibition centre, sub-tropical gardens, café & gift shop. Top Tip: We highly recommend packing a picnic and drinks for the interval. https://www.minack.com/

Kidz R Us is an extraordinary youth theatre group in St Ives (not far from the Royal Cinema), working with around 100 young people a year. A not-for-profit arts charity, they encourage participation of young people in the performing arts. Production standards are high, they’ve produced over 70 shows and won numerous awards – and Sir Tim Rice is their Patron. Typically, you’ll find musicals during half-terms and holidays, and a traditional family panto at Christmas. Review their website for the full program. https://kidzrus.net/

There are a few Escape Room experiences nearby. If you are unsure of what an escape room is here is a brief description: ever wondered what it would be like to go inside someone's imagination? Solve a murder? become the savior of Christmas? Or even time travel back in time to re-write history? They have themed escape rooms with capacity for teams of between 2 to 6 players. They’ll put 60 minutes on the clock and then it will be time for you to start solving puzzles, combinations, riddles and finding clues, seeing if you can Escape in Time?!
