Traffic on the South Fork can be unbearable so better to take the ferry from the North Fork in Greenport and cross Shelter Island to the South Fork. It will save a lot of time and the ferry ride is beautiful. Make reservations for the ferry and make this a day trip - enjoying both Greenport and Montauk.
