If you like hill walking Criffel is a must. Criffel is a hill in the historical county of Kirkcudbrightshire, Dumfries and Galloway, south-west Scotland. It is 570 m high but appears higher because of its great isolation and high prominence. It is a prominent feature in many of the views from the northern Lake District on a clear day

The very large, sandy beach of Sandyhills near Dalbeattie is great for sunbathing, picnics and swimming. The wide expanse of clean sand and shallow waters are ideal for paddling and bathing while low tide can sometimes reveal miles of sandy and secluded bays. There is a cafe and a small shop behind the beach as well as ample car parking.

Rockcliffe, a picturesque seaside resort since Victorian times, is situated around a small sandy bay and is perhaps one of the prettiest coastal locations in SW Scotland. The crescent shore is punctuated by craggy rocks and rock pools making it a magnet for rock pooling. The village overlooks Rough Island, a bird sanctuary owned by the Scottish National Trustthat can be reached via a causeway at low tide (except May and June to protect nesting birds.). There are also beautiful views of Hestan Island further offshore. Walk from here to Sandyhills along the coastal path, said to be one of the finest cliff walks in Britain, with stunning views across the Solway to Cumbria and the Isle of Man. Spot nesting seabirds such as fulmar, razorbills and cormorant in spring and summer. For spectacular views of the Solway climb the Mote of Mark, a Dark Age settlement with links to the legend of King Arthur ; or walk to Castle Point at its commanding position at the head of Rough Firth. Rockcliffe also has a curios/antiques shop which serves takeaway coffees that can be enjoyed in the garden and an ice cream van visits on sunny days.

Kippford is a village on the Solway Coast and lies just three miles from Dalbeattie. Kippford is an unusually narrow village on the shore of the estuary of the River Urr and is popular with yachtsmen. It is a charming waterside location and from Kippford you can take a stroll on the Jubilee footpath to the pretty village of Rockcliffe. There is a small shop in the village and several places for eating out.

The castle grounds, shop and toilets are open free of charge and no booking required (the castle remains closed). The moated, medieval stronghold, Caerlaverock's great triangular defences guard the Solway shore. This site has had a turbulent past. In 1300, its 60-strong garrison was defeated by Edward I's vast English army in a siege. Despite the castle's rugged appearance, its walls conceal a stunning Renaissance residence of the 1630s. See bluebells in spring, dragonflies and wildflowers in summer and barnacle geese in winter."
