Food Scene

Great atmosphere and staff, food is always delicious and music always on point. Personally, I like the turkey club with a Peroni from the tap!

BBQ literally right outside. Their coleslaw converted me. Try the Big Ol' Balls and the fried pickles for some great sides. Usually open quite late.

Sound Table has some amazing food and drink items on their menus. Definitely try the Brussels sprouts (if you’re not into Brussels sprouts, know that this dish has converted plenty of people!) and fries. I suggest getting there early because it can get a bit loud later in the evening when the place turns into more of a dance bar.

It’s a bit expensive, but Ammazza might be the closest and best pizza in town.

Staplehouse has a frequently-changing menu featuring fancy dishes like duck confit, octopus, and beef cheeks. Great fine dining not too far from home, but you should probably book a table ahead of time. You can also pay a $30 uncorking fee to bring your own wine.

Foxx is not bad. It’s not my first choice for food, but it’s definitely authentic Jamaican. You won’t find the stereotypical “jerk chicken” here, but instead curry goat, escovitch, and oxtails. Foxx also acts as a bit of a food import store in case you want to buy something interesting.

Definitely my top pick for brunch. You’re on vacation, so go large with the Comfy Chicken Biscuit. Or if you really just can’t, I recommend the Riverview Farms Breakfast Burger. Beware that brunch in Atlanta draws a big crowd, so get here earlier than later!

This small market has Jake’s, one of the best ice cream parlors in the city: you know those Biscoff cookies you get on Delta flights? These guys make an ice cream from those. Yes, really. If you’re looking for a nice couple’s activity, or just something new, the Irwin Street Cooking School is also here. Make sure to call ahead!

Drinks & Nightlife

An awesome coin-op "barcade" where the games only cost a quarter. Nice selection of classics from Pac-Man/Galaga, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade, Simpsons Arcade Game, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, etc. pinball in the back with the board games, and recently they've added a Rock Band room. Try the pickle-back shot for something new.

The boom box-painted storefront right next to Bone Lick. Great dance music, great drinks, and great location. Downstairs frequently charges a $10-20 cover, but if you go straight through into the speakeasy, you can find a totally different atmosphere (namely, a cover-free one). It also doesn’t hurt that this place’s back door literally puts you in my parking lot!

“Little Five,” or simply L5P, is a very bohemian style district that sprang to life in the 80’s. It now boasts a ton of really wild clothing stores (Rag-O-Rama), variety and thrift shops (Junkman’s Daughter, Crystal Blue), indie record labels and music stores (DB Records, Criminal Records, Moods Music), a great natural market (Sevananda) and all sorts of other places. If you’re into burgers, the Vortex boasts that it’s the best burger in Atlanta, but if you ask me, Vinburger at Lenox mall is the new #1.

This is a must see if you haven’t been. This is the largest aquarium in the western hemisphere and one of only two that have whale sharks! You can take the streetcar to the Centennial Park stop to get here.

Arts & Culture

Nearby on Auburn Avenue, less than a mile away, you can stroll through Martin Luther King’s old neighborhood, including his birth house and other historic sites right on the street. While you’re at it, visit the nearby King Center museum and experience the history of Atlanta’s place in the Civil Rights movement.

Parks & Nature

The BeltLine was a railroad system around and through Atlanta built to move cargo around the city. In 1999, a GA Tech student created the concept of rebuilding it into a scenic pedestrian-friendly walkway that will eventually connect many of the major parks and neighborhoods in Atlanta. Whether you’re in the mood for a little walkabout, just to explore, or if you’re looking for food or shopping, you can find it off of the BeltLine. My recommendations off the BeltLine are to visit Ladybird for a drink or a bite, Two Urban Licks for upscale and delicious dining (or brunch!), or to check out some of the parks along the trail – there are frequently events happening near the skate park!

Essentials

Just up the street, before Harold’s Chicken and Ice bar, is the A B Variety Store, where you can find a good selection of essentials, cereals, milk, beer, cheap wine, and, well, a variety of other things. It’s great if you forgot to get something when you went shopping, or if you don’t feel like going to a full on grocery store.

This is a great place to meet people, especially on the weekend when it gets really busy. Hop City has one of the most extensive beer selections I’ve seen in Atlanta, with plenty of local brews and even more imports. There’s a great food selection here, as well as some random merchants. Personally, I prefer either Gu’s Dumplings (spicy Chinese food) or Richard’s Southern Fried Chicken (Richard is a great guy, and makes some killer chicken biscuits). If you’re looking for unique gifts, XocolATL makes delicious chocolate right there in the shop, and Spotted Trotter has some fantastic meats and jerkies.

Simply called “PCM” by the locals, Ponce City Market was built to replicate New York’s Chelsea Market. There are some excellent restaurants in here as well as some great shopping! This is accessible from the BeltLine (you can’t miss it!). They offer free bike valet and parking, so you can rent a bike at the start of the BeltLine and make your way here. I recommend Biltong Bar for fantastic South African style cuisine, King of Pops for some great popsicles (no, really, popsicles can be great!), Lucky Lotus for a really good smoothie, and Simply Seoul Kitchen for a hot bun snack. Upstairs you’ll find Citizen Supply, a coop style shop with local artisans selling everything from leather goods to clothing to art, and complete with a ping pong table.
