MUST VISIT: A local favorite, this is a must visit place by all. The ambiance, the food, the concept, the music - everything was very nice. The gin bar at the center stirs up some really mean cocktails - you will rediscover gin here. There is a wide range of food to choose from. You can have burgers, sushi, pulled pork sandwich, desserts, etc - all delicious.

The Anne Frank Huis draws almost one million visitors annually (prepurchase tickets online to minimise the queues). With its reconstruction of Anne’s melancholy bedroom and her actual diary – sitting alone in its glass case, filled with sunnily optimistic writing tempered by quiet despair – it’s a powerful experience.

Framed by a gleaming new glass entrance hall, the world's largest Van Gogh collection offers a superb line-up of masterworks. Trace the artist's life from his tentative start through his giddy-coloured sunflower phase, and on to the black cloud that descended over him and his work. There are also paintings by contemporaries Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Monet and Bernard.

The Rijksmuseum is the Netherlands' premier art trove, splashing Rembrandts, Vermeers and 7500 other masterpieces over 1.5km of galleries. To avoid the biggest crowds, come after 3pm. Or prebook tickets online, which provides fast-track entry. The Golden Age works are the highlight. Feast your eyes on still lifes, gentlemen in ruffled collars and landscapes bathed in pale yellow light. Rembrandt's The Night Watch (1642) takes pride of place.

Parks & Nature

Very close to our home!!!! :D The lush urban idyll of the Vondelpark is one of Amsterdam's most magical places – sprawling, English-style gardens, with ponds, lawns, footbridges and winding footpaths. On a sunny day, an open-air party atmosphere ensues when tourists, lovers, cyclists, in-line skaters, pram-pushing parents, cartwheeling children, football-kicking teenagers, spliff-sharing friends and champagne-swilling picnickers all come out to play.

Amsterdamse Bos is a vast tract of lakes, woods and meadows criss-crossed by paths. It's filled with activities and is especially great for children. You can rent bicycles, visit the goat farm, kayak the waterways, see a play at the open-air theatre, ascend to the treetops in the climbing park or hang out at the cafes and pancake restaurants. In the densest thickets you can forget you're near a city at all (though, actually, you're right by Schiphol airport). The forest comprises roughly 1000 hectares of green space. A lot of locals use the park, but it rarely feels crowded. Take bus 170 or 172 from Centraal Station; the trip takes about 40 minutes.

One of Amsterdam’s ‘it’ clubs, Air has an environmentally friendly design by Dutch designer Marcel Wanders including a unique tiered dance floor. Bonuses include lockers and refillable cards that preclude fussing with change at the five bars. The awesome sound system attracts cutting-edge DJs spinning everything from disco to house and techno to hip-hop. Hours vary; dress to impress.

Pull up a stool at the carved wooden bar and pick from the glinting brass taps. It's all about Belgian beers here, as you may have surmised. Eight flow from the spouts, and 30 or so more are available in bottles. The ambience is quintessential gezellig (convivial, cosy) and draws lots of chilled-out locals. There's live music and DJs some nights.

Candles burn even during the day at this bar based in a mid-16th-century house, which is one of two remaining wooden buildings in the city. The name allegedly comes from the bar's role in the 16th and 17th centuries as a crash pad for sailors from the Far East, who often toted aapjes (monkeys) with them. Vintage jazz on the stereo enhances the time-warp feel. The place is stuffed with advertising signs and plenty of locals.

Since 1860 this famous flower market has been located at the spot where nurserymen and women, having sailed up the Amstel from their smallholdings, would moor their barges to sell their wares directly to customers. No longer floating (it's now perched on piles), the market here offers tulips in season and bulbs year-round, as well as clogs, fridge magnets and other kitsch souvenirs.

This is Amsterdam's oldest surviving building (from 1306). It's also an intriguing moral contradiction: a church surrounded by active Red Light District windows. Inside, check out the stunning Müller organ, the naughty 15th-century carvings on the choir stalls, and famous Amsterdammers’ tombstones in the floor (including Rembrandt’s wife, Saskia van Uylenburgh). The church often holds art exhibitions. You can also climb the tower on a guided tour.

Covering the square once known as Vlooienburg (Flea Town), the Waterlooplein Flea Market draws bargain hunters seeking everything from antique knick-knacks to designer knock-offs. The street market started in 1880 when Jewish traders living in the neighbourhood began selling their wares here. Food vendors waft falafel sandwiches, frites and other quick bites around the market's periphery.

Right outside De Hallen, this buzzing daily street market has everything you'll find at Amsterdam's bigger, better-known markets – fresh fish, fruit and vegies, fabulous Dutch cheeses, antipasti, nuts, spices, ready-to-eat snacks such as steaming-hot frites (fries), fashion, fabrics, homewares and bike locks – but a much more local crowd (and, to date, no kitschy souvenirs like fluffy clogs).
