Hoogstraat Rotterdam: great shopping street!
Hoogstraat Rotterdam (means High street) is a kind of messy, but one of the main shopping streets in Rotterdam city centre. Hoogstraat connects the Koopgoot shopping street with the Binnenrotte, where Rotterdam's biggest market and the huge Rotterdam Market Hall are located.
Shopping at Rotterdam Hoogstraat
The Hoogstraat shopping tour starts at the big market square called Binnenrotte, close to Blaak railway station. Next to Rotterdam's library you can drink Rotterdam’s award winning cup of coffee at Bagels and Beans (Hoogstraat 129b). You have to cross the Rotterdam market square and keep the Market Hall of Rotterdam on your left hand side. A little bit futher down Hoogstraat Rotterdam you will find a number of jewellers and tasty Surinamese sandwiches at Chinny. Opposite to Chinny (next to drugstore Kruidvat) you can walk to the Grotekerkplein to the Kids Marina, a nice attraction for kids during shopping in Rotterdam! If you are looking for body care and health products have a look at Sabon (Hoogstraat 197). Buy a package of typical Dutch sugar waffles at Markus' Booth at Hoogstraat. Sport2000 has a huge collection of Adidas sneakers (Hoogstraat 181). Visit department store V&D not only for their wide variety of goods but also for their roof top terrace Laplace that offers a good lunch with a nice view on the city center (Hoogstraat 185).

A visit to Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is a journey through the history of art. Dutch and European masterpieces provide a comprehensive survey of art from the early Middle Ages to the 21st century, from Bosch, Rembrandt and Van Gogh to Dalí and Dutch Design.
Art collection
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. In 1849 the lawyer Boijmans left his art collection to the city of Rotterdam. With the acquisition of the Van Beuningen collection in 1958 the museum got the second part of its name. The museum houses a unique collection of paintings, sculptures and everyday objects. The collection of prints and drawings is one of the best in the world. The museum also organises a diverse programme of spectacular temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
Old and modern masters
Marvel at the beautiful works by Bruegel the Elder and Rembrandt. Follow the development of Impressionism and Modernism in the paintings of Monet, Van Gogh and Mondriaan. Lose yourself in the dream world of the Surrealists Dalí and Magritte. And the art is not only inside: the museum has a wonderful view of the sculpture garden.
Contemporary art and design
The museum shows how everyday objects have changed over the last eight hundred years, from medieval jugs and glassware from Holland’s Golden Age to Rietveld furniture and contemporary Dutch design. A young generation of visual artists such as Eliasson and Cattelan bring the museum’s art collection up to date.
Stately beacon
The museum’s monumental building opened in 1935. It was designed by the municipal architect Van der Steur specially to house the collection. The stately redbrick building contains both large galleries where art can be viewed in daylight and more intimate spaces. The building survived the bombing of the city in 1940 and has been extended several times over the years. To this day the building’s tower remains a beacon in the city.
Public Art Depot
Only a fraction of the collection can currently be displayed in the museum: the majority of the 140,000 objects are housed in closed storage facilities. The museum regularly changes the permanent displays and works are loaned to exhibitions in other museums. Works from the museum’s world-renowned collection of prints and drawings can be viewed in the Print Room. With the completion of the Public Art Depot in 2018 the museum’s entire collection will be accessible to the public. The new building will also allow visitors to see works being restored and being prepared and packed for transportation.

The Oude haven is one of the oldest ports - berths for ships - Rotterdam. She is in the center of town, southeast of Rotterdam Blaak station.
After the damming of the Rotte the level of the High Street, the Middeldam remained to the south of a stump of the river with access to the Meuse, surrounded by wetlands. The first pier was built there around 1350. Today it is a well known and busy nightlife with bars and restaurants with terraces on the water near the famous cube houses, and Europe's first skyscraper the White House and the adjacent Marine Museum.
