Food scene

The Blacksmiths Arms is the local pub in the valley; it's small and charming, the real ale is reportedly delish and the food is exceptionally good.

Always busy, but worth the queue as the vegan food is exceptional and the setting is lovely. There is a good quality gift and homeware shop alongside the cafe too.

This pub is in the neighbouring Duddon Valley. It's under new management this year (2021). It's in a lovely setting and is a favourite for many regular holidaymakers. The valley is lovely and quieter than some others. Wordsworth wrote a beautiful sonnet about the Duddon River, and there is a lovely trail alongside it through the gorge, from Wallabarrow farm.

Lovely pub, with highly rated food. A good destination to head for when planning a day's outings. Lunch is walk-in but evening meals need to be booked as it's really popular.

Historical

An interesting historic site about 45-60 minutes drive away. Tours around the castle are friendly and easy. The gardens include an amazing rhododendron collections, and their Hawk and Owl Centre is very popular and is home to some amazing creatures.

The Duddon Valley, where Seathwaite is situated, runs parallel to the Lickle Valley, where I live. It's well worth hiking and wandering about in. The Newfield Inn offers good, staple pub food.

Black Combe is one of Wainwright's outlying fells and is often overlooked due to it being quite out of the way in the south west of Cumbria. It is famously 30ft short of being a true mountain. Great views both inland towards the fells and out across the sea.

A walk up to Dow Crag from the Duddon Valley is quite a trek, but it's a lovely alternative to the more famous and busier Old Man.

Several previous guests have enjoyed a half-day ride on with Annie and co, and have recommended this. 'We are a small, professional, family run Equestrian Centre unique in the use of our magnificent Clydesdale, Shire and Ardennes heavy horse breeds, for riding.' http://www.cumbrianheavyhorses.com/

It's a while since I hired a boat from here, but my guests who have enjoyed themselves. What their website says: 'There's lots of boat hire to choose from! Let our electric motor boats take the strain. Or maybe you'd like to row, row, row your boat in our rowing boats? All well behaved dogs are welcome on board. Try out sit on top kayaks, open Canadian canoes and have fun splashing about on paddle boards. If you can sail why not hire one of our sailing dinghies and follow in the wake of Arthur Ransome's "Swallows and Amazons"?

Charming narrow-gauge train ride from Ravenglass at the coast to Dalegarth in the Esk valley. Lovely scenery, especially in the open carriages on a sunny day; great outing for children (though the return journey can seem quite long for tired littlies after a busy day). Once arrived at Dalegarth I recommend a walk to Stanley Ghyll falls, and also popping your head into charming Eskdale Mill, the last remaining working water-powered corn mill in the Lake District National Park.

Sightseeing

A fabulous village, popular with tourists. William Wordsworth and his family lived here for some years, and his home, Dove Cottage is open for booked tours. There's an interesting museum alongside to supplement your enjoyment of this historical site. The village is full of teashops, pubs and cafes, mostly rather uninspiring (my take), but it's worth joining the queue for some Grasmere Gingerbread at the famous local gingerbread shop – it's scrummy. Sam Read's bookshop sells plenty of local publications and has other interesting books on his shelves and is worth supporting.

If you like buzzing tourist hubs you'll enjoy the renown Windermere and neighbouring Bowness. It's from here you can board a steam cruise and enjoy a ride along the length of Lake Windermere. Lots of shops, cafes and restaurants. For younger children there's the Beatrix Potter Visitors Centre, a walk-through experience of tableaux from Potter's lovely little books.
