Fantastic views across the Golden Horn on the water front. This government sponsored restaurant has good service and good food at a very affordable price. They have regular deliveries of Fresh fish which is the speciality but veterinarians and meat lovers can also find something good. It can get busy so arrive early. No alochol, limited English

For those of you who enjoy Nargile/shisha/hubble bubble pipe, whatever you would like to call it, here is local favourite that is cheap and cheerful. Food, coffee and drinks are also available. Green setting outside and an indoor area is also available. Just down the road is historical derelict wheat factory that's worth looking at.

This is one of a famous chain of Pide Restaurants. Pide (Turkish Piza) is absolutely delicious and comes in a several varieties. This in not a spot for a romantic dinner for two but it has great food at a good price. They do deliver, although there are no English speakers normaly. Always best to eat it in the restaurant, fresh out of the oven. The crunchy edges loose their crunch with deliveries but it's still good. http://www.nizampide.com (0212) 237 82 01

Hamdi is one of my favourite Kebabs in Istanbul and this is the best branch for kebabs. It is at the top of the Radisson Blu hotel just 5 min walk from the flat. Well priced for what it is. The views are stunning and the kebabs delicious! Try the Pistachio or Hashas kebab and do try the Lahmacun (Turkish meat pizza without cheese) as a starter. There are so many delicious dishes to try from you could go a few times. http://hamdi.com.tr/en/pera

Hamdi Eminonu is where this branch all started. It was a little kebab place serving the street porters but soon got well known for the excellent Kebabs. This branch is only worth eating the kebab if you're on the terrace floor to see the view, otherwise head to the branch 5min walk from the building in the Radison Blu as the Kebab is MUCH better. BUT this is a great place for Baklava!!!! They make them freshly on site so try before buy and leave with a box or pick out what you want and enjoy them in the cafe section on the ground floor or outside. http://hamdi.com.tr/en/eminonu

This tiny little Kebab shop offers a very very tasty durum. Durum is a kebab wrapped in flat bread. Here the speciality is Adana kebab, which is a spicy southern Turkish recipe of ground meat mixed with spices and chilli. My mouth is watering just thinking about it... Ask for a double (doobleh) as you get two pieces of meat instead of one. This is the best balance of meat vs. bread. Other options are available including a vegetarian kebab although I've never tried it. Try and see the pictures of the owner inside and order when he is making the kebabs. That is when they are at the best! Something he does is better, maybe it's just his timing but there is a noticeable difference!

A nice spot to get out of the crowds on Istiklal. A small opening on the side of the road almost hidden by a toy sellers stall, and you walk into one of oldest passage on Istiklal Street. Sit at an open air cafe and have Turkish tea or coffee while playing backgammon and local watching. Some souvenir and tourist shops at the beginning of the Passage. Some people come here to wind down after clubbing and if you're discreet you may be able to have another few drinks.

The views from hear are fantastic. It's mostly Turkish tourists who go here but there are a few foreigners. The cafe is dedicated to Pierre Loti, the furniture and the waiter’s clothes refer to the end of the 19th century. Typically a little over priced as with most places with a view like this. Worth a visit on a nice day. To get there you can take a funicular near Eyüp mosque and I'd recommend to walk back down through the cemetery. It's not creepy, it's beautiful and admirers of Arabic/Ottoman calligraphy can enjoy some of the inscriptions.

Karakoy is the up and coming scene of Istanbul. This was a simple restaurant but it has risen with the area. The food is still very good and quite typical. Lunch and dinner menus differ from each other. Lunch changes daily according to the seasonal ingredients available. If they have it, try the yaprak ciger (thinly carved fried liver) served with tomato rice. You might not like liver at home, but you might love it in Turkey! The way it's cooked is delicious. For dinner, have a look at the meze's and fish on offer yourself and choose what you like with the waiters help. Reasonably priced for the venue and quality of the meal.

Great Pizza just a few minutes walk away. If you have tried all the Turkish food that you want and for some reason don't want any more (I always want more), then try Miss Pizza. Wood fired oven and thin crusts. Some people say it's the best Pizza in Istanbul...I wouldn't go that far but it is good. www.misspizza.com.tr/en

A local favourite famous for it's beans, Kuru Fasulye. Simple, in-expensive, traditional and relatively fast. They some classical dishes from the simple side of the Turkish cuisine; döner, soups, stewed lamb etc. The dessert, Treleche, is not a typical Turkish dish but it was brought over by migrants and is a favourite here.

Zubeyir has risen in fame over the years. Tourists know about it, prices have gone up, portions are a little smaller but I still go back! There's limited menu of Mezzes(starters) but each of them is delicious, but don't eat too much. It's all about the grilled meat. The lamb shish, Beyti (house kebab), and the ribs (terak) are truly excellent. I haven't tried but please tell me if the koç yumurta/ram testicles are any good. On the ground floor, the grill is in the middle of the room. You sit around it eating kebab fresh from the fire. Great in winter, not so much in the heat of summer. They have several more floors upstairs in this historical building, each is nicely decorated.

I've often stopped here for a quick snack or late night bite and have always been satisfied. This tiny Kebab house is cheap and cheerful. Good Kebabs, friendly service and it's open until 2am usually. Prices vary but start from about 8tl for a Kebab and service (plate of salad and pickles). The more you pay the more you get. Do try the Açık Ayran (a-chick Ay-ran, Salty yoghurt drink freshly prepared on the premises).

This small but cosy restaurant is now quite common in many guide books. Great Meze, mostly sea food based and ask the waiter for the recommendation of what fish and main dish is best. It's not a cheap place but it is good and not bad value for what you get. Do book as the tables go fast in such a small place. http://www.mezze.com.tr/ +90 (0) 212 252 83 02

This place is open 24hrs, so it has a slightly higher price than normal but honestly it's pretty good. The Pide (turkish pizza shaped like a boat) is good. I always go for Karasik (mixed) and specify a few ingredients that I like, such as fresh chilli and an egg. The open bufe is less tempting to me depending on when you get there. It could have been prepared hours ago and sat there, but some of it is great. Trust your eyes and the waiter. If it looks good it usually is. If you're not sure ask for something freshly prepared like the Pide.

The name of this place means my darling liver, and yes they serve liver kebabs as well as meat and chicken. That's pretty much it. They bring a range of salads and plates to go with your meat, some flat bread to eat it with and then they bring the skewers hot off the grill! It's good value for the amount you eat and the food is satisfying. It's fun but not the most delicious meal you're going to have in Istanbul. I still come back and enjoy it here. Popular with the locals as well.

Karabatak is the Turkish name for Cormorant, those black, slender, diving birds that you see fishing in the Bosphorus. This cafe is a quirky place that is very popular with the trendy locals, with good reason. It's on an attractive crossroads with grape vines providing shade in summer. It's very attractively done. They've tried to keep the historic feel of the place whilst making it modern and the coffee and pastries are tasty with a good, varied, selection. You can have a good coffee all over Karakoy, but this is one of my favourites. http://www.karabatak.com/

This local favourite is open late. No thrills traditional kebabs cooked on an open grill. Ask for Adana (spicy ground meat) or a Urfa (Not spicy ground meat) durum (wrap) and you'll have your place set with paper. The kebab when ready gets served on a flat bread (pide) and placed on the paper, eat it with your hands. Customize it to your taste with the pickled chilli (hot), cumin, flaked chilli or thyme on the side. Have it with Ayran (salty yoghurt drink). If you're still hungry try an İçli Köfte (Kibbeh in Arabic). It's a ball of ground wheat stuffed with minced meat and spices. Served with lettuce and lemon. Lemon juice goes well with it in my opinion.

This is my mother's favourite restaurant when the weather permits. Excellent food, beautiful view and set in an old palace that was very well restored. They serve traditional Turkish food that is at a very high standard. The gardens are well maintained and you may see the peacocks or geese wandering in the garden. This a great restaurant to eat and be merry with a few beers or local wine. One of the better places to go with a group. The food is good and the prices are reasonable although not for the very budget conscious. Most of the restaurant is set in the back garden. In winter there are heaters and rain shelters so it's generally suitable all year round. For those who don't like cigarette smoke, it is outdoors so everyone around you may be smoking. Don't go if that may bother you. Book if you are a group for dinner, it is popular. http://www.viktorlevimoda.com/

Datli Maya is a charming but tiny restaurant. They took over the historical stone bakers oven to make this restaurant. Try anything from the oven; lahmacun, pide or have a güveç (stew cooked in clay pots). They do cater for Gluten-free, Vegetarians and Vegans. The desserts are mostly European but are also very good. Almost everything is tasty but I must admit a little pricey. You can't blame them as they cant fit many people in here and the high price is also due to the fact they try to source ecological and fair trade produce. Might not be the best place if you are claustrophobic. datlimaya.com +90 212 292 90 57

Beyti is one of my fathers favourite restaurants and is a long standing (1945) excellent kebab house. When going or coming from Ataturk airport he tries to fly in at a time to stop here for lunch as it's only a short drive from the airport. Excellent Kebabs. Beyti rears their own lambs to ensure the highest quality of meat. They also make their own home made mustard which is very strong and very good. This is THE local fish market. Some fish you will see still alive in buckets or taking their last breath on layers of crushed ice. It's not for everyone but if you love fresh fish, this is the place for you. Grab a Balik Ekmek (grilled fish sandwich) or there's some great, reasonably priced fish restaurants. This restaurant is very different. It was a historic prison, it has now been charmingly renovated by the architect owners who serve you and if you're lucky, serenade you with cabaret-style tunes from the piano and maybe some singing. It's Georgian cuisine, the food is good but not amazing, the desserts are very good. It's the atmosphere and uniqueness that the place and the old couple brings it to come here for. The place is a little hard to find at night and you have to ring the doorbell to get in - a little adventure. thegalatahouse.com (0212) 245 18 61

Hidden on a top floor of an apartment building (look for the Emir Han building entrance which is almost opposite Sofyali Sk, then get the lift to the 6th floor) this authentic restaurant serves delicious local meals for honest prices. Usually they have an extensive menu but they've been hit by the lower tourism. The menu is less extensive now but to be honest there was so much before that it took ages to choose so some may prefer it now. It's also a good place to share a few plates with some beer. Aynalıkavak Palace (Aynalıkavak Kasrı) and the Museum of Music inside, is one of the Ottoman imperial palaces and definitely a hidden gem. Built in 1613 by Sultan Ahmet I. The palace is in very good condition, has few visitors and has a great cafe with beautiful views across of the Golden Horn. open 09:00 - 16:00 (except Mon & Thur). entrance-5TL.

Balat is an up and coming area because of it's historical buildings and location by the sea. Many buildings in the area have been restored by UNESCO. It was the predominately Greek and Jewish quarter. It is well worth visiting if you are up to walking up steep hills and exploring neighbourhoods. It has become quite in with the 'Arts and Media' crowd, partly because it's picturesque but also because it's still cheap. There are some nice little cafe's and bars popping up. Transport there is normally annoying but from the building you can walk, take the Metro, bus, or ferry. Do check the boat schedule if you want to take a ferry. Download Trafi app for up to date results and directions.

Beylerbeyi Palaceis a great palace to visit. It's similar to Dolmabahçe Palace in architectural style but it's smaller, less crowded and there are no queues to wait for. Built between 1863-1865 by the order of Sultan Abdülaziz on top of the ruins of the wooden palace built during the reign of Sultan Mahmut II, it was used as the summer residence of the sultans and as the state guest house. Empress of France Eugénie, German Emperor Wilhelm II are among the guests who stayed here. The palace is a museum, entrance is 20 TL. The palace garden is very beautiful and there's a cafe where you can have breakfast, lunch, snacks or a drink. 1 TL to visit just the garden.

It looks like a normal building but it's made of cast iron. It is one of the world's few surviving prefabricated cast iron churches. The plans were prepared by Hovsep Aznavur, an Armenian of Istanbul origin. An international competition was conducted to produce the prefabricated parts. It was won by an Austrian company. The parts, weighing 500 tons, were produced in Vienna in 1893-1896 and transported to Istanbul by ship through the Danube and the Black Sea. After one and a half years' work, the church was completed in 1898. It was truly an international, multicultural endeavour. To take a peek inside, you may have to tip the caretaker unless you're a Bulgarian Orthodox Christian.

Considered touristic, but it's a local favourite. Charming coastal area by the Bospherous. There are market stalls selling gift items for local and foreign visitors. Prices and quality are reasonable. Market day is Saturday (mostly book sellers near the iskele/ferry stop). I avoid Friday and Saturday as it's crowded with bad traffic. You have local cafe's, nargile (shisha/hooka pipe), jacket potato stalls (Kumpir, a local favourite) in a long row, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. All budgets catered for. Do not be afraid to cross the road with the car traffic to explore the streets where few tourists go. Not so many souvenirs but you may find some local places you might like.

A short journey between Bebek and Ortakoy lies this small, lovely, old area. It has some beautiful old wooden houses and retains it's local way of life despite some very rich individuals moving into the area. Have a wander and maybe a tea or coffee. You can choose between a fashionable cafe or a local tea house. An hour or so should be enough to get the feel of the area.

Another wonderful example of Mimar Sinan's work. It was commissioned by the daughter of Süleyman the Magnificent in 1548. If you wander around the neighbourhood you will see plenty of examples of his work in Uskudar. This neighbourhood is one of the most educated demographics in Istanbul, but it also a conservative neighbourhood. You wont find any bars here but you will find a lovely food market, bustling streets in one spot and quaint quite roads in another. Interesting to wander around and see what you can discover.

This is definitely out of public eye. Here you have a run down indoor mall with a surprise inside. There are floors of antique sellers and reproduction atolye/workshops inside. This place is only know by antique dealers and film studios who rent the furniture here. Have a look and maybe find yourself a bargain!

Souq is the very fashionable and trendy indoor market in Karakoy. It is all independent local designers. You may well see local celebrities popping in and browsing or even selling at their stall. Jewellery, vintage clothing, bags, home wear and textiles, there's a range of things on offer in this tiny market. Around the area there are several trendy, funky, cafes, restaurants and bars. Prices are generally inflated for Istanbul but these are designer items and it is a good experience. http://www.souqkarakoy.com/

Kadıköy Balık Pazarı (Fish Market), Is similar to the Beyoglu and Besiktas fish market. Unlike the Beyoglu fish market there are fewer touts trying to lure you into their restaurant but it's just as crowded as either of those two and sometimes more so. Some tourists do come to see this bustling neighbourhood but the majority here are locals and foreigners living in Istanbul. The surrounding area is full of shops, restaurants and bars. A great neighbourhood to explore and one of the favourite neighbourhoods for locals.

This little soap and towel store is a great place to pick up gifts or a little something for yourself. They stock traditional and more modern takes on the Turkish hamam towel / peshtemal as well as hand made soaps and accessories. They are friendly, helpful and have a good selection to satisfy all budgets.

Take a walk along the sea shore , rollerblade, bicycle, or just act like a local. This is a popular place for local students to hang out, play guitar and sometimes have a drink. They aren't rowdy at all, so don't be concerned. It's a good atmosphere and nice walk.

Tunel Funiculer is the second oldest underground passenger rail service in the world after the London Metro system. If you don't want to walk the steep path of Galata, this funicular is a fastest method to travel between Karaköy and Sishane. Remember that you will miss the Galata Tower if you ride it, so it's best to take it going up (Karakoy / Sishane) to to save your legs from the steep uphill climb.
