a great way to see the area. It is a paved former railroad bed. There are no noticeable hills and very few places where the trail crosses roads (always watch out at these junctions though, because the cars don’t always see you). It is ideal for bicycling with family or for walking. You have two choices. You can go 7 miles south into Millerton; the Rail Trail heads south for 10.7 miles and ends at the Wassaic trail station. Or you can go north 3 miles to Under Mountain Road. From there the trail heads north for 4 miles and ends just north of Copake Falls.

The trail head is about 1 mile north of my house. Here is a link to a map: www.dutchessny.gov/CountyGov/Departments/DPW-Parks/tmsbracemt.pdf Beautiful waterfall and great view from the top

Copake Falls is an amazing waterfall, and there is a state park public swimming area in an abandoned quarry. Both are great for kids. The swimming area has a dedicated non-swimmer area for young children.

Food Scene

There are a lot of good restaurants in the area. With most, it’s a good idea to call ahead and make a reservation. If you see Sky Farm Greens listed on the menu, the farm you are staying it (my house) is Sky Farm. _____________________________________________________ Irving Farm Coffee House, our answer to Starbucks with soup, sandwiches and a hometown feel. Irving Farm has its own roasting facility here in Millerton; they have four or five shops in New York City but this is the original. No reservation needed but on weekends don’t be surprised if the line is long. ________________________________________________________ Manna Dew Café, a great place for dinner, generally not overcrowded but it’s still good to reserve. 52 Main, serves tapas and takes pride in tastings of its wines. It has a popular bar scene and is open late. Be careful —the police watch as people leave and sometimes give DUI and speeding tickets. _______________________________________________________ Oakhurst Diner, is a diner that cares, with organic hamburgers and more._____________________________________________ Harney and Sons Fine Teas has really good tea and exceptional lunches at their shop in the center of town. Go to see the tasting room to try 150 kinds of tea, stay for the very special sandwiches. Harney and Sons is probably the most famous boutique tea company in the world; their teas are on the menu at all the royal houses in England. The factory is here in Millerton and all the Harney family members live in the area (one son is an owner of the Oakhurst Diner; the widow of company founder John Harney Sr. owns one of the prestige real estate farms here, Elyse Harney Real Estate). _______________________________________________________ Taros is good for pizza or ravioli and other pastas. Great salads. No reservations. ____________________________________________________ Talk of the Town, in the little retail mall on Route 44, next to Chad’s Hair Salon, is a breakfast place where the locals hang out for coffee and sandwiches. _______________________________________________________ Avocado Café, next to the North East Health and Wellness Center (a popular gym), has authentic Mexican food. It’s not 100 percent reliably good. _______________________________________________________ Golden Wok, pretty good Chinese food and some Japanese items including noodle soups and sushi. _______________________________________________________ Four Brothers, some Greek specialties at a very high-quality diner. The owner, Peter Stephanopoulos, also owns the Boathouse, a popular restaurant in Lakeville; and he owns a goat farm and makes extremely good, sweet yogurt and feta cheese.
