In 1806, the Kingdom of Bavaria was made up of many small principalities, and Munich, which had been rather sleepy, explodes from only 40,000 people. The old residence is greatly expanded and the wasteland to the north (direction Schwabing) becomes part of the city. At this time Paris is the measure of all things, and the Wittelsbach rulers rely on pomp and culture: the main axes run towards the residence. Maximilian and his son Ludwig I. build splendid boulevards, Maximilianstrasse and Ludwigstrasse are completely rammed out of the ground and the buildings are filled with government institutions and ministries. Education was the trump card par excellence and so the university, state library, opera and national theater come to these streets. The art collection in the Old Pinakothek and later in the New and then the Modern is particularly famous.

In a mixture of determination and happiness, the newly minted kings look for a new community symbol of the new Bavaria, they copy the traditional clothes from the Austrians and make it - a "tradition" that practically did not exist before, and promote, for example, traditional costumes and traditional weddings and the picture of Lederhosn and Dirndl is born. Both emerged from everyday farm clothing and then became more and more special, for example with the Charivari (leather pants chain) or the dirndl apron, where the side of the bow signals the relationship status: married (right), single (left), virgin (middle). And the historical luckless draw the Wittelsbachers when Ludwig I celebrates his wedding with Therese on a festive manner and thus, rather by accident, founded the Oktoberfest in 1810. There have been traditional costumes since 1835. In the country, the costume quickly established itself, in the big city the costume was almost frowned upon in everyday life until 20 years ago. What always worked in Munich, however, was a popular robe (“Gewand”) for public occasions, a traditional costume jacket. For a few years now, the normal Munich peole have a traditional costume hanging at home, but it is more of a favorite disguise for the Oktoberfest.

The most dazzling Bavarian, King Ludwig II, left comparatively little traces in Munich, but insane buildings all over the country that brought the country close to state bankruptcy and possibly Ludwig to his death. Thanks to Walt Disney, Neuschwanstein Castle becomes the epitome of a fairytale castle, Herrenchiemsee Castle looks like a wonderful film set on the island and the dazzling Schachenhaus is high up in the mountains near the Zugspitze, but can only be reached in a one-day mountain tour. And again, incidentally, this king, with his building rage, ensured that many remote corners were well developed, but unintentionally: he wanted the people to never enter his possessions.

Adolf Hitler, who was also intoxicated by the mountains of Bavaria, once again massively changed the face of the city, many buildings were erected in National Socialist architecture and Königsplatz was the beginning of a Utopia city of movement. With the House of Art, Hitler wants to enforce his idea of true art - which is why, after the fall of the Third Reich, this museum now specifically displays everything that Hitler would have viewed as degenerate art.

Driving a freeway over the mountain was absolute nonsense in terms of traffic policy, but the Nazis still built it there: drivers should be overwhelmed by the mountain panorama when driving south. And, yes, it still works today, even often too long in the many traffic jams.

Much of old Munich is in ruins during the war, little remains of the old town. Once again there was a tremendous jolt in Munich with the 1972 Olympics. Perhaps the most spectacular stadium in the world, including the underground network, is now being built on the former airport field in the north, which was the central rubble ditch after the war.

Just in time for the 1972 Olympics, former aircraft engine builder BMW is building its new company headquarters, the famous four-cylinder engine and museum, popularly known as the "Weißwurstkessel". BMW shapes Munich to this day, the BMW world, essentially the pick-up location for new cars, is the most visited building in Bavaria, where all current models including Mini and Rolls Royce are shown. The entire brain of BMW sits behind it in the huge FIZ development center and 3-series models are built on the right in the factory.

When we moved to our longing city of Munich over 30 years ago, we were surprised that the city died out on some weekends. Until we understood: Many Munich residents are deeply connected to nature and then populate the mountain peaks, huts and lakes. And it is no coincidence that the joke comes that Munich's southernmost district is Lake Garda - it is a classic weekend destination. The cozy man from Munich goes to the beer garden, takes the cable car up to the mountains, lounges at the many lakes and walks in mountain huts. The more active ones go deeper into the mountains to go hiking, climbing, racing biking, mountain biking, alpine or touring skis. Most unite the love for Italy, South Tyrol is a classic short vacation destination, and somehow Munich is always a variant of the Italian dolce vita.

20,000 people work in the FIZ research and engineering center of BMW; it`s located between our studios and the BMW plant. Built in 1986, the FIZ is currently being expanded by 15,000 jobs. So a BMW ist the standard-car on our streets.
