City/town information

Closest town to Whitbarrow Village, about 10 miles away. A small market town with a population of approx 15000. There are supermarkets, pubs and cafes. Most of the supermarket car parks offer free parking for up to two hours. Some on-street parking is free but you may need to display a parking disc showing the time of arrival. Some of the local shops can provide a disc. There is a museum and castle to explore. The energetic can walk up a challenging hill to Penrith Beacon and enjoy spectacular views over the town. Information about the beacon walk can be found at http://www.penrithtowntrails.co.uk/downloads/beacon.pdf and more general information about Penrith at https://www.discoverpenrith.co.uk. Subject to Covid restrictions, in late October each year there is a spectacular Winter Droving Festival with masked torchlight processions. The processions also take place in Pooley Bridge at the north end of Ullswater

The gateway to the Lake District. A vibrant town with about 5000 inhabitants. Many cafes, pubs, galleries and outdoor shops. There are also several cycle hire shops. There is also a leading theatre (Theatre on the Lake) which, once the Covid 19 restrictions are removed, will put on some excellent productions. See https://www.theatrebythelake.com for more information. You can go for a sail on Derwentwater on one of the many launches which sail up and down the lake. See https://keswick-launch.co.uk/ for more information. Portinscale village is a short distance from Keswick, the walk is fairly easy. Here you can windsurf or hire a dinghy from Nichol End Marine. Whinlatter Forest is a short drive from Portinscale, towards Buttermere. There are ample car parks and many signed trails (ranging from Easy to Extreme) for mountain biking in the Forest. There is also a Go Ape treetop forest experience (https://goape.co.uk/locations/whinlatter). Slightly further afield is Honister Slate Mines which offers mine tours and canyoning and for the brave (or foolhardy) there is the Via Ferrata Extreme Climbing Experience. See www.honister.com for more information. Pre booking will be essential for some of these activities.

Bowness is on the shores of Lake Windermere, the largest lake in the Lake District. Very busy at peak times (and not much quieter at others) there are a variety of shops, bars, cafes, and galleries. Go for a cruise on one of the Lake Steamers or even have lunch or dinner on a sailing yacht.

Sightseeing

One of the largest lakes in the Lake District. A short distance from the apartment. Can take a trip on a lake steamer from the villages at each end of the lake (Pooley Bridge and Glenridding). There are pubs, cafes and shops at both. Those in Pooley Bridge have outdoor tables on the banks of the river. Stop off between both villages and visit the stunning Aira Force Falls. If you wish to visit somewhere more remote follow the road round the other side of the lake from Pooley Bridge, past Howtown and on to Martindale Church. Here you can climb Hallin Fell for fantastic views over Ullswater, follow the lower path around the bottom of the lake which takes you to Glenridding, or continue driving until the end of the road where you can walk up on to the old Roman supply route High Street

On the shores of Lake Ullswater between Pooley Bridge and Glenridding. A fairly short walk up the valley from the car park, although it can be challenging in places, to the spectacular falls. If time allows, consider walking further up the valley past the falls to the village of Dockray. Remember to go prepared for this walk, proper walking shoes will be needed and the Lake District weather can change quickly, but the rewards will be worth it.

Lovely tranquil lake. Keswick is the largest town on the shores. Take a launch trip down the lake, or hire a windsurfer, paddleboard or dinghy at Portinscale and have fun on the lake. If fell walking is more your thing then both Cat Bells and Grisedale Pike are easily accessable from the west side of Derwentwater close to Portinscale and Whinlatter Forest.

One of the most beautiful English lakes. There is an easy walk around the lake, although the more energetic can climb Haystacks at the southern end of the lake. Make a round scenic driving trip from Keswick, past Whinlatter Forest Park to Buttermere through the Newlands Valley. Return via the southern tip of Buttermere over Honister Pass and back to Keswick by the Borrowdale Valley. There are some lovely easy walks along the river close to Grange village.

One of the most picturesque and iconic places in the Lake District. Access via a narrow road off the B5299 road from Keswick to Grange. Carry on past Ashness Bridge and you will chance upon Surprise View. Probably the best view in the Lake District, you will see Derwentwater in all its majesty from an elevated position. Absolutely stunning. You can carry on further from Surprise View. You can walk down to the impressive Lodore Falls or walk/drive to the remote hamlet of Watendlath and Watendlath tarn

Just re-opened following the floods of 2015 this is a tarmac path of 5 miles from Keswick to Threlkeld. Following the course of the old Penrith to Keswick railway line this path is suitable for all ages and abilities. It is open to both walkers and bikers (plus the occasional roller blader) and can be walked from either end. There are pubs coffee shops at either end of the walk.

Tarn Hows is a picturesque man made lake close to Ambleside. There is a fairly easy walk (taking about 40 minutes) around the lake. There is a large car park, but the access roads are fairly narrow and it can get busy at peak times. The Drunken Duck is an excellent local pub, but booking will probably be needed to secure a table at peak times

Fell Walking

If you are into fell walking and have a head for heights then Helvellyn will be a must. Park close to Glenridding at the south end of Lake Ullswater and then take one of the many paths up the mountain

Skiddaw may also be a "must-do" for any fell walkers in the Northern Lake District. There are several routes to the top, perhaps the most popular is from Dodd Wood on the Carlisle to Keswick road close to Bassenthwaite Lake

Blencathra is the closest peak to the apartment and, at 868 metres above sea level, one of the tallest. Accessed from Threlkeld village, the summit is approached from Doddick Fell. An exhilarating walk with superb views of most of Cumbria and northern England from the summit.

Neighbourhoods

Local facilities
The apartment is located close to Berrier which is a remote hamlet off the A66 Penrith to Keswick road. It is a fairly quiet environment. Two pubs stand out. There is the Boot & Shoe in Greystoke village, a traditional village pub. Turn right when leaving the resort, Greystoke is about three miles away. The pub is in the middle of the village. Slightly close to home is the Sportsman Inn. Perhaps slightly more basic than the Boot and Shoe, the Sportsman offers good value home cooked food and a wide range of beers and other drinks. The log fires are especially welcome in the middle of winter. Turn left on leaving the resort, then left again and the Sportsman is ahead of you at the T junction. It is about a 20 minute walk. Slightly further afield, going towards Keswick on the A66 there pubs just off the main road at Troutbeck (The Station Inn), Scales (The White Horse) and Threlkeld (The Saluation & The Horse and Farrier)

For the golfers among you, Keswick Golf Club is only a few miles away along the A66. Whilst not the longest course it is probably one of the most scenic with all round views of the Lakeland Fells. If you prefer a slightly longer course then Penrith and Windermere courses are both within easy driving distance.

Why not visit Dove Cottage, where Wordsworth lived and wrote some of his most important works. Close to Grasmere village and both Grasmere and Rydal Water lakes. There are some lovely walks in the area. The round lake is fairly easy although some of the walk is on the road. Take a slight detour and visit Cathedral Cave (also known as Rydal Cave) above Rydal Water. Or you could take a slightly longer and more strenuous walk from the centre of Grasmere up to Easedale Tarn

Combine this with a trip to the spectacular coastal region of St Bees Head and maybe enjoy an exhilarating walk around the headland. Why not take a trip to the Lakes Distillery just north of Lake Bassenthwaite. Take a distillery tour and see how they distill both gin and whisky. Try a sample after your tour and perhaps enjoy a meal in the bistro. And you can even meet the resident alpacas. Advance booking would probably be advised for the distillery tour.

Situated just outside Penrith on the junction of the A66 and A592 to Pooley Bridge and Ullswater, about 15 minutes drive from the apartment. Built into the hillside, there is a lovely cafe, gallery, gift shops and childrens play areas. Well worth a visit particularly if the weather is not particularly good. The name Rheged was one of the kingdoms of the Hen Ogledd ("Old North"), the Brittonic-speaking region of what is now Northern England and southern Scotland, during the post-Roman era and Early Middle Ages. Its stronghold was originally thought to be in Cumbria, but recent archaeological evidence now suggests that this was located in what is now Galloway in Scotland. Rheged possibly extended into Lancashire and other parts of northern England
