Lake Vouliagmenis Heraion

The region of Loutraki Perachora has become a favorite trip destinations from Athens. For its tiny size it has a lot to offer and it takes just around one hour by car to reach its capital Loutraki. In the region of Vouliagmeni, just a few kilometers from the center of Loutraki, embraced by a natural pine-forest, lies one of the most beautiful lagoons in Greece. The whole landscape is simply awesome, a glimpse around just takes your breath away. Discover the grace of the ancient fairy, the peaceful lake An island-like, sandy beach combined with a crystal clear, shallow blue sea, taverns and restaurants with seafood and premium Mediterranean gastronomy, sea sports and activities and an amazing beach-bar resto will showcase a dream scenery that will enchant you. This beautiful Heraion Vouliagmenis lagoon has a sandy beach and a narrow canal, with the help of which its waters communicate with those of the Corinthian Gulf. From this opening, which does not exceed six meters, the sea descends into the waters of the lake creating vortices. What makes it different from a simple beach is that its waters are much saltier than those of the sea. In fact, something else is characteristic. Its waters are renewed every six hours with the effect of tide and low tide. At the point where the sea flows into the lake, is a small, typically Greek, whitewashed church with a sky blue dome, Agios Nicholas(St Nicholas) If you are very, very lucky, you just might happen upon a wedding being held here, and see the Bride and Groom, being ferried across the lake, in a tiny fishing boat!
The sandy coast of the lake is lined with fish taverns and there are a couple of beach bars with sunbeds and umbrellas on its western end. However, our favorite swimming spot is at the picturesque Agios Nikolaos Church. There is no beach there, just a concrete pier with a couple of wooden fisherman boats anchored in front. But it’s much quieter during the busy summer weekends.

Heraion & Melagavi Lighthouse

The Heraion of Perachora (Ηραίο Περαχώρας) is a sanctuary of the goddess Hera situated in a small cove of the Corinthian gulf at the end of the Perachora peninsula, about 100km west from Athens (about 1.5 hours drive). It is located north of Loutraki, which is a good choice to stay overnight, if you want to visit also other places in the area. Corinth is just 15km away. According to a legend narrated by Euripides in his tragedy called “Medea”, Medea buried her murdered children at a sanctuary of Hera Akraia as she fled from Corinth. That sanctuary most probably is the Heraion of Perachora. The archeological site is located above a small cove with turquoise waters, where one can swim. The small beach is partly sandy and partly covered with small pebbles. There is also a small jetty here, where small boats can dock. The whole area is of an exceptional natural beauty. The Melagavi lighthouse, also known as Heraion lighthouse, was built in 1897 on the Agrilaos peninsula, in the golf of Alkyonides Islands. In 1947, the building was renovated and repaired. Its outline is T shaped, and it has a rectangular light tower. It is made of stone and it constitutes a typical example of classical lighthouse architecture. Melagavi is renowned to be one of the 10 most beautiful lighthouses in Greece and it is also one of the most photographed landmarks by travelers.

Corinth Canal (Isthmos)

The Corinth Canal separates the mainland of Greece from the Peloponnese Peninsula. Specifically, the Canal links the Gulf of Corinth of the Ionian Sea with the Saronic Gulf of the Aegean Sea. A map of Greece shows not only its thousands of islands but also this peninsula that would be the country’s largest island if it weren’t connected to the mainland by this four-mile-wide strip of land. Technically, the Corinth Canal makes the Peloponnese an island, but since it's so narrow, most experts still refer to it as a peninsula. You can enjoy the amazing view, from the canal's bridge, 79 meters (260 feet) above sea level, and take your photos. The sailing across the canal is a unique experience. The color of the water has many amazing shades of emerald and the rocks, with their sprouting bushes and pines, rise imposingly at 70 meters. The trip starts from the port of Isthmia, which is located near the exit of the canal in the Saronic Gulf, heads west towards Posidonia and returns. The trip takes about an hour. Activities Bungee Jumping Corinth Canal can be the ideal spot for adrenaline seekers.
