In Sitio you will find the Santuario da Nossa Senhora da Nazare. According to the legend, Dom Fuas Roupinho was chasing on horseback a deer up a hilltop on a misty September morning in 1182. When the deer jumped over the edge of the hilltop into the void, his horse was about to follow, when the knight invoked the intervention of the Madonna, who made the horse turn away with a supernatural effort and saved the life of the knighthe Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazare is an imposing Marian shrine that memorializes this legend. It was founded in the 14th century, on the occasion of the arrival of King Ferdinand on a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Nazaré. The King decided to build a new and improved place of cult, since the original Hermitage did not have capacity to receive the high number of devotees of the Lady.

The Miradouro do Suberco viewpoint is located in the heart of the city, on a magnificent cliff, 110 meters above sea level, also acting as a breakwater. Here you can observe the panoramic view of the town below, the green hills, and sandy golden coast stretching for miles, as well as well as the unlimited space of the Atlantic Ocean. In close proximity to the viewpoint there is the main square, where you can buy local products, handicrafts and souvenirs, with some of the sellers wearing the traditional attire of the Seven Skirts.

The Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo was built in the 16th century, and sits in the same area of the lighthouse, and more than just a viewing point, it also doubles up as a surf museum, where boards from the most famous big wave surfers are on display, truly a spellbinding view, making this one of the most worthwhile attractions in Nazare. The Lighthouse sits on the tip of the peninsula and is perched firmly on a dramatic cliff’s edge, and it is the perfect place to take in and view Nazaré’s world-famous, magnificent, crashing waves, these waves are as uncertain as they are exclusive, they aren’t always there, they rely on storms in high sea that will bring the swells. The Nazare Canyon is the cause of such incredibly monster waves, a puzzling geological phenomenon 5.000 meters deep and about 230 km long. The big wave season begins in November and ends in February, attracting top surfers from all over the world.

This is a living museum whose main purpose is preserving the ancestral tradition of fish drying, right on the sand of Nazare Beach. Absolutely one of a kind, fish drying in Nazaré is a remarkable trade mark of local identity. This living museum is both a tourism attraction and a privileged means of offering better working conditions for dry fish sellers, as well as creating new working places and keeping this unique tradition alive. These dry fish sellers are part of the soul of Nazaré!

Praia do Norte is a 1.5 Km long expanse of golden sand backed by sand dunes, and the stage for the world famous giant waves. Besides the legendary surf, this is also a fantastic beach, and pretty much the opposite of Nazaré's other beach. You won't find cafes, toilets, lifeguards or even a car park here, it is as wild and untouched as it gets, and that is magic!

Pedereneira is a fishermen's place since the 12th century, Nazaré itself is relatively recent, in the 17th century the sea still touched the counterforts of the Pederneira Hill. With the sea going back, the fishermen descended to lower altitude areas, znamely Nazare Village. The Pederneira Lookout is in a forestry area, and has amazing views over the coast, the whole of Nazaré, including Sitio, and the Leiria Forest.

This is a wonderful viewpoint right outside of Nazaré, you can literally see the whole city, ocean, and countryside from the top of this hill. At the summit, at an altitude of 156 meters, the grandeur of the panorama surprises and delights. Here you will find the guardhouse of the forest watchman and a small chapel! You can walk here from the apartment, or you can drive or bicycle to the trailhead and hike straight to the summit via the steps, and then descend on the other side through the wonderfully peaceful forest.

A small lagoon in the dense pine woods of Leiria, just north of Valado dos Frades, the Lagoon of Valado or Saloio forms on its own a fresh water resource of great ecological and landscape value, being a refuge for birds, reptiles and amphibians. A little known place where one may cool down in perfect peace, after a walk through the forest!

Whoever visits Nazaré should not miss the Nazaré Municipal Market, with its diversity of smells, textures and colors. Walking through the aisles you run the risk of being seduced by many of the vendors calling out to you, it’s a place where you can find the freshest products in the region, like vegetables, fruit, cheeses, sausages, and the freshest fish and seafood, some of which are still very much alive! The joy of visiting Nazaré's municipal market fills anyone's heart, so do make some time to pay it a visit!

Sitio da Nazaré is the historical Center of Nazaré, and the ideal spot to contemplate this absolutely unique coastal town, as well as the impressive North Beach, while feeling the wind on your face, and if you are lucky enough to come at the right time, you’ll even get to see the Atlantic Ocean as you have never seen it before!! Sítio is less crowded than the village below, but still boasts an array of cafes and restaurants, and little souvenir shops and stands where some of the sellers still wear the traditional seven skirt attire! The apartment is located halfway between Sitio and the Village below!

There’s more to Nazaré than its impressive waves. Nazaré is also a charming and colourful seaside fishermen town, where we can still clearly see the importance of tradition. Nazaré has developed in a very sustainable way, paying homage to its common heritage and historical memory. The whole town exudes a charm of traditional way of life, at times you will feel transported back in time as you could almost take a glimpse into the past. The main attraction is the town itself and its people, so do take time to walk around and observe.
