Food Guide Madrid: Best Tapas, Casual + Gourmet Dining

My Spanish Food Guide to Madrid

A collection of excellent Spanish eateries, that I know very well, that i've tried and tested for over 20 years, as well as some that I'm still to try. The focus of this collection is on Spanish food, because after all, I believe that you're in Madrid to experience Spanish things, as opposed to finding the best sushi outside of Japan. Although you can find excellent food from different cuisines from around the world in Madrid, I have limited the focus to Spanish cuisine. I also include places that have been recommended to me, which I have not yet tried personally. There's some hidden gems that tourists would not know about and some more touristy favourites, too. The local favourites may not be used to serving tourists / "guiris" , so don't be surprised if their English isn't strong please.
[I've not been personally] La Fábrica is a decent spot to grab a few drinks, if you're in that part of town. If you're bar hopping, looking for a cold beer or a glass of wine, then you might as well pop in for 30-60min. The tapas are ok.

[Tried + Tested] Serrano 80 is just around the corner from the apartment. It's a 1min walk around the block. It's your local for a quick and easy lunch or evening meal. [Tried + Tested] The Michelin starred Amparito Roca is only a 5 min walk up the road from the apartment. It's got very tasty tapas and perfect beers, and offers a lovely ambience on its terrace. You just have to stop here for a drink and a some tapas. I made this terrace my local hangout. Cold beers, excellent tapas at a great spot with professional service. I’ve only been to the terrace, not indoors. But I’ve been 10 times in a month. Food 5/5 Every dish i tried was brilliant. for example: The croquetas, ensaladilla rusa and the ventresca de atún con pimiento , are hands down the best I’ve ever had. No joke. Given that these are Spanish tapas staples, it’s hard to imagine that they could be the best- but they truly are! They make these with little delicious twists. I’ve attempted to copy the recipes at home! Service 5/5 Super friendly and professional! Ambience 5/5 It’s well located and there’s a lovey crowd If you’re in the market for top quality tapas that blow your mind, then this is a must-visit.

[Tried + Tested] O'Caldiño is pretty much our local pub. It's a 5min walk from the apartment and is one of the favourite watering holes in the neighbourhood for locals. You can go just for some beers and wines, or for some tapas at the bar or for a proper sit-down seafood dinner - so you can spend very little or splash out. When you go, be sure to say hi from me: Saludos de parte de Sebastian! You can't go wrong at O'Caldiño. If you're just looking to have a cold beer or a glass of white Albariño, or you're doing a family feast with fish and seafood, then they got you covered. The small platters of seafood or empanadas, as well as, the soups or larger grilled fish dishes are perfectly executed. Food 5/5: They cook delicious traditional Galician cuisine. It must be one of the best Galician restaurants outside of Galicia. The owner and chefs know what they're doing. There's a varied menu, which is unsurprisingly shaped by tasty fish and seafood dishes. Try the soups, percebes, prawns and grilled fish dishes. Service 5/5: The staff are just lovely. I've known this loyal bunch for nearly 20 years. It's always a great sign when staff stay at a restaurant for decades. Fernando, Diego, et al, have great chemistry with their team, which translates to all round great service. They'll suggest fitting food for your party and never leave your glasses empty, if that's what you'd like! Ambiance 5/5: It's a cozy and comforting neighbourhood favourite. Because they're going for a casual, traditional theme they get the locals, including the neighbourhood police squad, from Barrio Salamanca dropping in for a beer or a few tapas. It's not trying to be fine dining, nor is it trying to attract tourists. O'Caldiño is a local eatery that welcomes you in, makes sure you're watered, well fed, and having fun. It's a place I rely on and take anyone to who is new to Madrid.

[Tried + Tested] Lateral on Velázquez is your classic local, casual yet tasty terrace. It attracts a fairly chic crowd, the drinks are cold, the food is decent and it offers decent value for money. The service is a little slow, so bring some patience. It's a great spot for a pit stop while you're shopping in the area, perfect for a quick lunch or some drinks and tapas with your friends. Definitely insist on sitting out on the terrace if the weather is nice, it's worth waiting for a table out there.

[Tried + Tested] The locals come here for meeting friends over some drinks and tapas. There's always a chic posh crowd. The food menu is the same here as it is at the Velázquez venue. So it's decent value. The only real difference is the location and ambience. This one is more vibrant. If you're going for dinner with a group of 4 or more, then it's usually easier to get a table here than at the smaller Velázquez spot.

So it's just a 2min walk from the apartment. Although it's not Spanish food, I'm recommending it because you may fancy something different and it's right by the apartment. The hot chocolate drink is somewhat thicker, and used as a dipping sauce for your churros, which are like donut sticks. It's quite the treat! [Tried + Tested] At Taberna de la Daniela they arguably serve THE BEST "Cocido Madrileño". That's why people come here. This tavern is perfect for a traditional sit-down lunch or dinner with some friends. The focus is on big dishes and red wines. The only reason to go is to order the cocido with a bottle of red. As in, I wouldn't go if your intention is to have a beer and some jamón. When I'm planning a big family lunch in Madrid, this place would be at the top of my list. Because the cocido is a substantial dish, it's best to go in the colder seasons for a long Sunday lunch. But you can of course go give it a try any time that suits you. It's not a touristy place, please don't expect their English to be any good.

[I have not been personally] At El Caldero they focus on rice dishes from Murcia. So if you're looking for a large rice dish with seafood to share, then this is a place to consider.
