Experience

A brief hint of the history of the caves The caves at Chislehurst in Kent, are a labyrinth of man-made tunnels, forming a maze covering over 6 Hectares and are up to 30 metres below the homes and woodlands above. The caves have been carved out over hundreds of years. The caves were dug for chalk used in lime burning and brick making for the Building of London, as well as for flints to fire the tinderboxes and flintlock guns of years ago. First open to the public in 1900 as a showplace, the guides told the Victorians history of Romans, Druids and Saxons, Smuggling and Murder. The last 100 years has added munitions storage for the Woolwich Arsenal in the 1914-18 war, Mushroom growing in the 1920 and 1930’s and becoming an underground town as the largest deep air-raid shelter outside London, protecting over 15000 people every night during the Blitz. In the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s the caves were used as a venue for dances and concerts, presenting the foundations of Jazz, Skiffle and Folk music to the most famous names in pop and rock. Now the caves are open as a tourist attraction and education centre with a gift shop and Café catering for visitors, group outings, private functions and children’s parties.

Once a favoured medieval palace and then a Tudor royal residence, Eltham Palace was transformed by eccentric millionaires Stephen and Virginia Courtauld. Discover the Courtauld’s extravagant lifestyle as you explore their stylish home which incorporates original medieval features into an otherwise ultra-modern 1930s design. The intriguing mix of historical features continues in the captivating grounds. Admire stunning herbaceous borders and planting and relax in the Rock Garden with its series of pools and cascades running down to the picturesque moat. Cross London's oldest working bridge and admire views of the house from the lawn. With plenty of wide open spaces, it's the perfect place to take in the fresh air, relax and play. You don’t need to book your ticket in advance, but you will always get the best price and guaranteed entry by booking online ahead of your visit.

Train station 5 min drive up the road

Train station 0.8 miles from home, a 15 min beautiful walk. Even Chislehurst is not on the Tube, has its own rail station in Zone 5 that offers trains to Cannon Street, London Bridge, Waterloo, and Charing Cross in between 20 and 30 minutes, and trains to Blackfriars in about 40 minutes. Nearby Elmstead Woods is in Zone 4. The area is well-served by local buses, including a night bus to Oxford Circus, and road links - including the A20 to the M25 - are good.
