The story goes that Wordsworth was on a walking tour of the Lake District when he first saw the beautiful Dove Cottage. Instantly falling in love with the cottage, he decided to make it his home with his sister Dorothy. The location was the inspiration for many of Wordsworth’s poems as well as for Dorothy’s ‘Grasmere Journal’. These days, Dove Cottage and the Orchard Garden is a fascinating

The Lakes Distillery opened in 2014 on the former site of a derelict farm, near Bassenthwaite. Aiming to create world-class spirits, the distillery produces whisky, gin, and vodka. The distillery’s single malt whisky won’t be available for general sale until 2018, but it does have a blended whisky that uses whisky from across the UK to create a unique taste. You can take a tour of the distillery, learn about the production process, and enjoy a guided tasting session. After, tuck into a hearty lunch or scrumptious afternoon tea at the on site bistro

At the top of Honister Pass that connects Buttermere with Borrowdale, south of Derwent Water, the Honister slate mine has been mined for slate since the early 1700s. Today, Westmoreland Green Slate is still extracted from the mine and used to create a whole host of beautiful and functional products. However, these days, the mine is better known for the various adventure activities it offers, including the exhilarating Via Ferrata. On rainy days, you can seek shelter from the elements inside the mine, where you can take a tour on foot or attempt to climb through some of the less accessible sections.

Windermere Lake Cruises has a large fleet of modern and traditional launches and ‘steamers’, which operate the full length of Windermere, calling at Waterhead, Bowness and Lakeside. A return cruise between Bowness and Waterhead takes about 1.25 hours. A return cruise between Bowness and Lakeside takes about 1.5 hours, and a return cruise round the whole lake takes about 3 hours. City/town information

For many visitors, the Lake District is synonymous with Windermere, which is both the largest lake in England and its most popular. It’s been a major tourist centre since 1847, when the trains first steamed into town carrying passengers eager for the fresh air and stunning scenery, and it’s been pretty much the same ever since. Transport options have improved, and there’s a broader choice of leisure activities both on and off the water. Access to the lake is from Bowness-On-Windermere, which is just a short hop from Windermere town. Culture & Heritage There are 14 islands in the lake, the largest of which is Belle Isle (formerly known as Longholme). In 1250 it was the seat of the Lord of the Manor and a Royalist stronghold during the Civil War. In 1774 an unusual circular house...

At the northern end of Windermere is the popular market town of Ambleside, perfectly located in the heart of the national park. Surrounded by majestic Lakeland fells, Ambleside’s roots are in the medieval woollen trade, but the town you see today is primarily Victorian, built of traditional grey slate. With easy access to Grasmere, Keswick, Windermere and an unrivalled range of water sports, walks, climbs, cycling and much more, Ambleside is very popular with both leisure visitors wanting a relaxing break and outdoor enthusiasts looking for a challenge. There are also some fabulous restaurants, cafés and pubs to satisfy the discerning palette and numerous award-winning ales to quench your thirst. Ambleside’s specialist shops offer a welcome variation on high street chains. There is no shortage of outdoor clothing specialists waiting to kit you out in the latest gear for any activity, from walking to windsurfing. Lakeside Pier Described by purists as ‘the true Lake District’, Ambleside is a walkers’ paradise. Plenty of routes begin from near the Waterhead Pier, so why not grab a copy of Windermere Lake Cruises’ handy walkers leaflet – or even better, buy a copy of ‘Walks Around Windermere’ from the attraction’s team – a labour of love by local man, the late Jim Fleming. Waterhead Pier is less than a mile from Ambleside’s town centre, being just a pleasant stroll or electric shuttle bus ride away. The Armitt Museum art gallery and reference library gives you the chance to explore the history of life and arts of the Lakes. In addition, there’s also an exhibition about the life of Kurt Schwitters and of course, lots to learn about Beatrix Potter. There’s also information on the nearby remains of a Roman site, which is free to explore. Zeffirellis is Ambleside’s famous independent cinema, offering viewings of films made by new and emerging talents, while Fellinis shows art-house and independent films, as well as holding performances. There’s also The Old Courthouse Gallery which showcases the best arts and crafts on offer in the Lakes. For some quality outdoor time, check out Rydal Mount and Gardens. The home of William Wordsworth for nearly 40 years, this house inspired many of his poems – and tweaks to existing works including his world-famous 'Daffodils'. After exploring Ambleside, make use of the Langdale Rambler bus service between March 25 and November 3 to visit other surrounding towns and villages before heading back to Ambleside. Before getting back on a Steamer, you can also have a go in a self-drive power boat or rowing boat. Just ask the team on the lake shore!

Nestling at the foot of some spectacular fells and with its own lake, this village has many shops, pubs and cafes. You can also visit Wordsworth's grave in the churchyard and buy the legendary Grasmere Gingerbread. Popular walks include following Red Bank Road and then the footpath along the west shore of the lake towards Rydal Water. With no motor boats, this quieter lake is great for swimming and rowing. Keswick is both the most northerly of the Lake District’s towns and maybe its best located: at the northern end of beautiful Derwentwater, it’s surrounded by large fells including Skiddaw and Blencathra, two of the most popular among walkers and hikers. It’s also the perfect spot to explore this part of the national park, notably the valleys of Borrowdale and Buttermere. Right in the heart of the Lake District National Park, Keswick is still only 20 minutes from the M6 – and close enough to some of the Lake District’s best-known lakes, including Bassenthwaite, Thirlmere and Ullswater as well as Derwentwater. Fancy some fell-waking? There’s Skiddaw and Blencathra, but don’t forget Grizedale Pike and Catbells, a fell that is popular with walkers of all ages and abilities.
