Neighbourhoods

Edinburgh's Old Town sits slightly up from the rest of Edinburgh surrounding the Castle, it is full of historic tenement housing (like ancient style apartment blocks) and cobbled streets. It's historic streets are breath-taking and its history fascinating - it is an Edinburgh "must visit".

The New Town of Edinburgh is an architectural marvel, a walk down some of the stunning georgian crescents are advised. It is home to Princes Street and incorporates the major shopping destinations in Edinburgh like St James Quarter - the new mega one recently refurbished and opened. Harvey Nicols is also in St Andrews Square and worth a browse, a walk down the neighboring Multrees Walk will take you right into St James center with it's multitude of shops.

This is a briliant museum and it's FREE! I highly recommend a visit here as it's engaging and fun especially for children. It has so much to offer with different sections of historical relevance, you can visit just the ones you're particularly interested in but it's just fun so I would recommend you pay it a visit.

This is an ancient stone mosaic situated right outside St Giles Cathedral in the Royal Mile. The heart marks the location of the entrance to Edinburgh's Old Tolbooth Prison which was built n 1561 and then demolished in 1817. According to legend, Edinburgh’s petty thieves and not-so-petty criminals spat on the door, as they passed, to bring them luck against the day when they found themselves being taken through it. Two centuries on, with the building gone, the heart in the cobble stones still reminds of the misery and torture carried out behind its walls. Many people spit on this mosaic as a sign of respect and good luck (no, I don't recommend spitting on it) and its history is a bit grizzly with many people being executed there!

Camera Obscura and Worl of Illusion is simply fun for all the family! Situated up near the Castle, it is a paid for attraction and well worth the money and will keep kids entertained for quite a few hours (and the adults). So much to do and see, it's a family favourite winner.

Edinburgh is a walkable city

Most places can be accessed by walking. From the historic Royal Mile to the New Town and Princes Street, it is really easy and 10 minutes walk at most. Get the comfy shoes on and do as much exploring as you can fit in. Taxis are easy aswell with numerous taxi ranks and you can just put your arm out and flag a black cab down or use Uber.
