The palace was commissioned by the couple Ferdinand Maria and Henrietta Adelaide of Savoy to Agostino Barelli in 1664, after the birth of their son Maximilian II Emmanuel of Bavaria. The central pavilion was completed in 1675. In 1701, the heir to the sovereign duchies of Bavaria, Maximilian Emmanuel, ordered a systematic extension of the palace. Two pavilions were added, one to the south and the other to the north of the Barelli palace by Enrico Zuccalli and Giovanni Antonio Viscardi. Later, the southern section of the palace was further enlarged to form the stables. For balance, an orange plantation was added to the north. Finally, a large circle with baroque mansions (the Schlossrondell) was built under the rule of Maximilian Emmanuel's son, Charles VII.
