Sightseeing

It is one of the most popular seaside resorts in the Silver Coast. Portugal’s most famous fishing village is now becoming important as well in the world of big wave, tow-in surfing. The tallest wave ever recorded being surfed – by a Hawaiian big-wave surfer – was off Nazare. We recommend you to visit Forte de Sao Miguel, which is high above Praia da Nazare at the end of the mountain rim. You will be mesmerized by the amazing view of Atlantic Ocean appearing from the lighthouse.

Pedro and Inês – Portugal’s royal love affair similar to the tragic romance between Romeo and Juliet. The austere Santa Maria de Alcobaça Monastery was built in 1153 and is listed as a World Heritage Site. The Monastery is linked to the Cistercian monks and associated to the birth of the Portuguese nation.

Join us for a visit of the Quinta dos Loridos, where the impressive Buddha Eden – the largest oriental garden in Europe, can be found. The oriental garden with around 35 hectares of land was created as a reaction to the destruction of the Buddhas of Banyan, in which one of the greatest acts of cultural barbarity took place, erasing masterpieces of late-period Gandhara art. From Buddhas, pagodas, terracotta statues and the various carefully-placed sculptures which can be found throughout the gardens, it is estimated that some six thousand tons of marble and granite were used to create this monumental work of art. The central staircase is the focal point of the garden, where the golden Buddhas

The “Wedding Town” was the traditional bridal gift of the kings of Portugal to their queens, a custom begun in 1282 by Dom Dinis. The parish church, Igreja de Santa Maria , was chosen for the wedding of the ten-year-old child-king Afonso V and his eight-year-old cousin, Isabel, in 1444. It dates mainly from the Renaissance, though the interior is lined with seventeenth-century blue azulejos (or painted tiles) in a homely manner typical of Portuguese churches. One corner of the triangular fortifications is occupied by a massively towered Castle built by Dom Dinis which has been converted into a Pousada.

This amazingly Dominican monastery and cathedral, with its countless carved figures of saints and soaring flying buttresses, is undoubtedly the best example of High Gothic architecture anywhere to be seen in Europe. The monastery celebrates the victory of King João I over Castile at the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385 and is particularly notable for its Manueline decorative motifs. Inside the chapel are the tombs of King João I and his English-born wife Queen Phillipa of Lancaster – called Lencastre in Portugal - who spawned the ‘Illustrious Generation’ including famous explorer Prince Henry the Navigator. The Batalha convent was added in 1983 by UNESCO to its list of World Heritage sites.

A beautiful town at the foot of the mountain range of the same name, its unique characteristics have led UNESCO to classify it as a World heritage site. In the 12th century, Dom Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, captured the Moorish Castle, and his successors later built their holiday residence. The palaces are outstanding, such as the Pena Palace, built in the Romantic period on one of the mountain peaks, and the 18th century Palace of Seteais, now converted into an elegant hotel, and the Palace of Monserrate, famous for its beautiful gardens with their exotic species that areunique in the country.

Cascais is a coastal town, one of the richest municipalities in Portugal. The former fishing village gained fame as a resort for Portugal’s royal family in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The famous Estoril Casino is one of the largest in Europe. Near the casino is the “Hotel Palacio” (Palace Hotel), a 5-star hotel where scenes of the James Bond movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” were shot.

The town owes its name to the thermal spring that was much appreciated by Queen Dona Leonor, wife of the 15th century King Dom Manuel I, who had the opportunity to confirm the curative properties of these waters when they cured her of a wound that for a long time had not healed. As the waters were much in demand at the time by the local people, who bathed in them to cure their ailments, the Queen ordered a hospital to be built so that they could treat themselves in some comfort. Around the hospital a village was formed, which came to be known as Caldas da Rainha (The Queen`s Hot Springs).
