Y Polyn is a small pub/restaurant tucked away in the verdant Towy valley between the county town of Carmarthen and chic Llandeilo. open six days a week, for lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday and for lunch only on Sundays. We’re not trying to be cutting edge or post-modern here. You won’t find foams, gels and technical wizardry on the plate. What you will find is beautiful produce cooked simply and with respect. Saltmarsh lamb, Welsh beef and free range, rare breed pork are highlights of the well balanced menu. We’re very keen to avoid pretention at Y Polyn. Tables are mismatching bare wood, tablecloths are banished, staff wear jeans and you get to pour your own wine. www.ypolyn.co.uk

Paxton's Tower is a Neo-Gothic folly that can be seen for miles from many areas situated on a hilltop near Llanarthney in the Towy Valley. It was built sometime between 1805 and 1808 and erected in honour of Lord Nelson and probably to a design by Samuel Pepys Cockerell.

Skomer is an enchanting island with just about everything an island nature reserve should include. It is the second largest island in Wales, after Anglesey, and one of the most important wildlife sites in Europe. Guillemots, razorbills and puffins soar purposefully up to the cliff, while fulmars slide serenely along the currents of air. Flurries of kittiwakes circle like eddying snowflakes, and the repetition of their urgent cries harmonizes into something almost musical. In the cloistered stillness the air shimmers with the sound of wings, and strident seabird calls echo against rock and water.

A small bay backed by dunes and pine trees, accessible only by a half mile walk from the nearest car park. Swathes of golden sand and crystal clear waters, Barafundle has been voted many, many times as one of the best beaches in Britain and the world; it’s often likened to a Caribbean beach! This pristine beach is isolated which means no facilities; so everything you take has to come back up over the cliffs. If you’re planning to visit, check out the tide times to make sure you’ve plenty of beach to play on and that you don’t get cut off by the incoming tide!

St Fagans first opened its doors to the public on July 1 1948. Since then, the Museum has grown to be the most popular heritage attraction in Wales. We are celebrating the Museum’s 70th birthday with an exciting programme of events and activities to mark this milestone in our history. Take a look at our online exhibition of photographs charting our history, from conception to present day. Visitors to the museum can enjoy a pop-up exhibition featuring images from the last seven decades which will be on display in the new atrium space in the main building from early March. https://museum.wales/stfagans/

Arts & Culture

Even if the poet, writer and broadcaster Dylan Thomas (1914-1953) hadn’t lived at the Boathouse in Laugharne for the last four years of his tragically short life, it is a truly remarkable place to visit. The Boathouse terrace offers wonderful views of the Taf estuary and the Gower beyond – a haven for egrets, lapwings, herons, oystercatchers, seals and otters with fishermen and cocklers continuing the ancient traditions. The Boathouse tearoom with its locally sourced, home-cooked menu provides a welcome respite for walkers tackling the newly launched Wales Coast Path.
