Located about 20 miles northwest of downtown Austin, is a fast-growing community on Lake Travis called Lakeway, TX. Lakeway is a vacation town that’s nestled quietly between scenic Lake Travis and the wild Colorado River. As a holiday spot, Lakeway is perfect with sun, sand, surf, as well as long nature hiking trails that mark the land around this Texan jewel.
Accordingly, the town itself is packed with attractions for kids, adults, and retirees. After a heavy rainfall, fossil evidence is found in the limestone deposits in and around the streets and gullies. Plant and molluscan forms and dinosaur footprints are clearly visible.
You can take pleasure in a variety of water sports offered on Lake Travis by Lakeway Marina. Rent pontoons, jet skis, basic speed boats, paddle boats or enjoy the evening breeze on a dinner cruise or a party boat. Party barges are all about group entertainment. They easily and comfortably accommodate 70 people with all the amenities needed to ensure a fun-filled fiesta on the lake. Your party is surely set for success when the basic amenities include surround sound systems, BBQ pit, and a waterslide.
Rent a boat with Outbound Sailing, and you’ll be spending the day cruising Travis Lake aboard a beautiful 40-foot yacht piloted by Captain Tim, who possesses encyclopedic knowledge of the lake and its surroundings. Gently glide past bird sanctuaries, protected bays, and even a few celebrity homes — which Tim can point out to you as you pass — and return after a few hours with stories to tell the friends you’re meeting for dinner that evening.
For a more adventurous escapade and a more extreme sport, Aquafly Austin can hook you up. They will hook you up and strap you onto a fly board and fly you up five feet or more above the water. It can be the ultimate challenge!
Lake Travis Zipline Adventures is everything a local attraction should be: fun, friendly, exciting, relaxing, and great for families who want to try something different. Check in with the desk at this local company, and Captain Dan will take you all on a hike up the hill to one of the company’s zipline stations. Ideally, it will be a warm day and you’ll all be hot and sweaty when you crest the hill, where you hook in to the line and zoom down to the lake, where your ride ends and your swim begins.
Check out High 5. It is a bowling alley and a restaurant with plenty of bowling lanes, arcade games, junk food, and beer for the adults. You can challenge your companion(s) to a game of bowling or laser tag. Or, get plenty of quarters and spend time at the arcade with their extensive
If you are looking for some wine and relaxation, look no further than Lake Travis Wine Trader where apparently “everybody knows your name”. Lake Travis Wine Trader is known as a great gathering place to party with friends and spend the day tasting a large variety of wines and cheeses. Time your visit to coincide with the “Big Winos” event and you can sample some fine upscale wines worth more than $200 a bottle, or schedule your visit the same time as the winemakers and vineyard owners come in to promote their products. Great discounts are offered on prices so bring all your friends.
After all your activity at the marina, the bowling alley, or flyboarding, wine and cheese alone may not quite satisfy your ravenous appetite. But never fear! The list of local restaurants reads like a supreme smorgasbord of endless feast selections. This town’s culinary menus are of such variety as to satisfy any palate.
If oriental-style is what you are hungry for, Pao’s Mandarin House and the Sakura Sushi and Bar will feed that hunger. General Tso’s chicken, hot and spicy dumplings, or sushi and lotus rolls will surely spice up your day.
Just need time to relax? The laid-back Grumpy Grouper bar may be just the place to unwind with some great barbecue and live music. Don’t miss the Little Greek just because it is slightly hidden away in a shopping center in Lakeway. They serve great gyros and healthy Greek menu items either indoors or outdoors–depending on the intensity of the Texas heat.
For fun and sometimes unique comfort food, the League Kitchen and Tavern is the place. You can order the egg and bacon on a hamburger patty served to you on a doughnut. For the ever-favored Mexican fare, you can try Don Mario Mexican Restaurant. They specialize in the comfort food of many Texans–street tacos, Mexico City-style. Or if all that time on the lake has got you hankering for seafood, a refreshing shrimp cocktail is sure to comfort that craving.
If you are running short on time and need to eat and grocery shop at the same time, Table 620 is your time saver. It is attached to an H-E-B so you can do both. Do not feel guilty about eating before going home to cook your newly bought groceries. Table 620 is a non-profit, so you are actually eating for a good cause.
Cousins Carleen Rubio and Miranda Valenta operate a little breakfast shop in Lakeway, right off of the 620, where regulars and tourists crowd in for authentic homemade meals all morning long. Cafe Lago offers fresh-brewed coffee, baked goods, and a raft of fresh Mexican cuisine that changes by the day and by the mood of the chef.
Lone Star Farmer’s Market is one of the principal attractions Lakeway offers visitors. Here, you can pick up produce so fresh, it still has dirt on it. The local economy is heavy on the small farms you thought disappeared in the ’80s, so there’s a wide variety of low-volume, very personalized market sellers hawking highly seasonal goods. Check in every morning to find something different on display, and try to snag at least one fresh watermelon if you’re in town for the summer.
Discover a New Favorite Beer at Oasis Brewing Company. From Thursday to Sunday each week, Oasis Brewing Company offers tastings and tours of its Lakeway facility. Up on the third floor of its stately headquarters, guests can experiment with various low-alcohol brews that are formulated to keep the dry mouth and headaches associated with heavy malts to a minimum. While you’re experimenting, you and your companions can enjoy good food and good company while gazing out over the expanse of Lake Travis, which is essentially next door to the brewery.
In the 19th century, it was discovered that salt miners were almost abnormally healthy relative to their communities. Today, salt therapy is a popular attraction for people of all ages and health conditions. Austin Salt Caves recreates the environment of a salt mine for visitors who want to experience the effect for themselves. Regular spa treatments are available, as is the chance to just relax between artificial walls of mined salt, where you can relax by the hot tub for as long as you want.
