German Soldiers’ Cemetery was blessed on 31 August 1963. Its mausoleum contains the remains of over 2,500 German soldiers who fell during the Second World War. The area is bounded by an almost metre-high fence built of natural stone. In the entrance lobby of the mausoleum is “Mother and Son”, a sculpture by Ursula Querner. Eight rows of limestone panels line the main hall, on which are engraved the names, ranks and dates of birth and death of the deceased resting below. A tall, iron cross has been placed in the cemetery, with a commemorative plate bearing the text: “In honour of those war cemeteries which our love cannot reach, may the peace of the Lord be with them.” The cemetery is located on the shores of Lake Norvajärvi, 18 km to the north of Rovaniemi. Signposted from highway 4. From the car park, a sand path around 500 metres long will lead you through the forest to the cemetery area. More information about German Soldiers’ Cemetery in German
