Pilane This vibrant agricultural landscape features Stone Age settlements and Iron Age tombs alongside world-class art. Sculpture in Pilane Pilane cemetery is one of Sweden's most beautifully located burial grounds. Here there are about 90 judge's rings, standing stones and stone settings from the Iron Age. Everything is surrounded by an ancient cultural landscape with traces from the Stone Age. Nature Grazing sheep keep the fields open. Typical meadow plants such as cat's foot, meadow violet and almond blossom grow on the hills. There are also plants here that belong on the really nice natural pastures, for example spring vetches, dwarf dandelions and spongy woolly grass. On the way from the parking lot to the burial ground, you pass an old shell gravel road. The sea reached here 10,000 years ago, when conditions were favorable for clams and shells. There are also many lime-loving plants here, such as wild flax, bramble, ragwort and many other species. History In the past, flint chips and parts of tools have been found in the area, but findings during excavations in the early 1980s show that people settled here as early as 8,000 years ago. During the latter part of the Stone Age, people kept cattle, cultivated the land and hunted. Next to the exit from Kyrkesundsvägen there is a rock carving from the Bronze Age: fifteen ships with flared fore and aft parts and so-called manning lines. There are about 90 graves here from the Iron Age (500 BC to AD 1050). In the northern part of the burial ground there are some judges' rings. Find here Drive road 169 towards Skärhamn, turn right at the Kyrkesund sign at the Vallhamn intersection. Pass Kållekärr and drive another 3 kilometers. Turn right at the roundabout, towards Kyrkesund. Follow the road for 4.5 km and then turn left at the Pilane and Gravfält signs. A couple of hundred meters in, on the right, is the burial ground.
