Our local Fishmonger, with daily fresh fish from the nearby fishing village of Volendam. Being surrounded by water, the Dutch eat a lot of fish, often as a snack at the fishmonger or the herring market stalls you see at many street corners, try it for yourself. The staple snack is raw herring with onions. The Dutch will eat it on the spot. An acquired taste, but very addictive once you tried it and a healthy choice. Another more safe choice and popular snack is 'Kibbeling', battered and fried chucks of cod, often served with a garlic or tartar sauce. Another typical Dutch fish is 'gerookte paling' or smoked eel from the Ijselmeer, the lake in the middle of Holland. As a snack it is served on a white bread roll. And finally you have to try the 'Hollandse garnalen' the Dutch North Sea shrimps, small but the most tasty shrimps you will have tasted. You can order a shrimp salad as a snack.

Best fish shop around. People line up outside for their delicious herring and fried fish (take away or eat at counter).
