Starigrad is also called Starigrad Paklenica for it is located in front of the present Paklenica National Park, extending over 20 kilometres of coastline from which emerges the highest Croatian mountain range, the Velebit range giving it fairytale scenery. The locality and national park are the leaders and initiators of active and adventure tourism in Croatia ranging from trekking and mountaineering to alpinism with a series of world famous competitions. Many of our conquerors of world peaks practiced here, on the Velebit, next to a crystal clear sea. Its incredible landscape testifies hundreds of years old traces of mankind. It still hosts remains of the Roman Empire, its world unique “mirila” (resting places) mills, and nowdays rural tourist estates, jeep safari tours, gatherings of Karl May and the serial Winnetou fans… Velebit overlooking Starigrad is the habitat of hundreds of plant and animal species of which many are endemic and protected, karst phenomena, caving miracles and registered in the UNESCO Network of World Biosphere Reserve.
