What a wonderful learning experience and an opportunity to share dinner! Getting there is half the adventure—you take a kayak across the river. We went at night, and let’s just say the thoughts of caiman and snakes had me rowing like I was in the Olympic finals. The history shared was fascinating, and one of the first origin stories recognizing African transatlantic ocean voyages centuries before commonly known was eye opening. The dinner itself was simple, yet a cacophony of flavors that made for one of the most memorable and delicious meals I’ve had. Truly an experience to remember. Highly recommend!

This is a must do experience for Hopkins, and really anyone visiting Belize. It is a unique opportunity to not only learn about Garifuna culture and history, but it's also hands on and delightful. From the time you cross the river in a kayak, you are in a different world. The experience involves a history lesson about the Garifuna people and more. Next is a garden tour and discussion of healing plants, followed by a cooking lesson in which you make lunch: hudut. There is also a drumming lesson included.

It was beautifully organized and so informative and I had a great time getting to talk to the hosts.

This is a once in a lifetime experience and shouldn't be missed. you will come away with a greater understanding of Garifuna culture. Absolutely amazing!

Palmetto Grove was an absolute joy to stay at! The location is private, but also relatively close to the town of Hopkins which has great restaurants to check out. The place has plenty of windows for a fresh breeze, fast internet, and the solar setup had plenty of juice to run fans and charge our phones.

Uwahnie was an amazing host as well - be sure to message her about setting up some cultural experiences with her - including food and drumming of the Garifuna people, or even tours of Monkey River!

This was an absolutely beautiful and enriching experience. Being immersed in Garifuna culture—from the powerful storytelling to the hands-on cooking and the connection to the land—was unforgettable.
